PHOENIX (May 21, 2025) — U-Haul® will symbolically kick off “moving season” on Friday with the ringing of the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange.

The ceremony will also mark the start of a special summer for the do-it-yourself moving and self-storage leader, which is celebrating 80 years of empowering American families with residential mobility.

Memorial Day weekend begins a busy three-and-a-half month stretch through Labor Day when nearly half of all residential moves in the U.S. occur each year.

That means lots of reliable U-Haul trucks and trailers on the roads, and U-Haul teams and local dealers at more than 24,000 rental locations across the U.S. and Canada working to meet the mobility needs of millions of customers.

“Moving can be a stressful life event, and for 80 years our job has been to make people’s lives easier through accessibility, affordability and support,” said Navy veteran and U-Haul Co. of Manhattan/Bronx president Jeff Sonberg, who will ring the closing bell. “We welcome the chance to care for every customer who needs U-Haul services.

“It’s exciting to ring the bell on another moving season,” Sonberg added. “To do so alongside fellow veterans and Gold Star families just before Memorial Day is an honor.”

Commitment to Veterans

U-Haul was founded by a WWII Navy veteran and his wife in 1945, with the first one-way trailers being available to customers on or about Independence Day of that year.

The Company’s commitment to veterans is as prevalent today as it was then. Recognized consistently as a top veteran-friendly employer, U-Haul commits a substantial portion of its community work toward organizations that honor and address the needs of veterans.

U-Haul is a founding sponsor of the 20th annual National Memorial Day Parade and will march again on Monday in Washington, D.C., to salute and remember our fallen heroes and the families that they left behind.

Sonberg will be joined on the NYSE floor by Gold Star family members; active-duty military members; Army, Navy and Marine Corps veterans; veteran service representatives of the USO, United War Veterans Council, and Achilles International; and FDNY veterans and their veteran liaison.

Other distinguished U-Haul members will include Nick Marra, Area District Vice President of the New York City metro area; Allan Cotto, U-Haul Co. of Northern New Jersey president; Felicia Roberts, U-Haul Co. of North Central New Jersey president; Sebastien Reyes, President of A&M Associates, the U-Haul in-house advertising and marketing team; Ashleigh Wagner, Community Relations manager; and Robert Price, Army veteran and customer service rep.

Tea and The Tribute Journey

Prior to the May 23 closing bell, U-Haul will help put on The Tribute Journey Fleet Week Afternoon Tea from 1-3 p.m. at the NYSE.

The tea returns to New York City during Fleet Week (May 21-27) for the first time since the COVID pandemic, honoring Gold Star families, senior officers, veterans, veteran service representatives, and the Sea Services.

Kathryn Cross, U.S. Navy Gold Star Mother, artist and Tribute Journey founder, has partnered with U-Haul since 2009. Tribute Journeys are expressions of appreciation for current service members and veterans through the delivery of custom-made greeting cards. Cross creates the illustrations and poetic verses, and the cards are printed at U-Haul International headquarters in Phoenix, Ariz.

U-Haul produced 45,000 Memorial Day Tribute Journey greeting cards this year that will be delivered to VA hospitals in 49 states before Memorial Day.

“Our Tribute Journey Fleet Week Afternoon Tea provides an opportunity for Gold Star parents and families to unite with the military’s most senior officers and join together without a schedule, ceremony or media to acknowledge the lives dedicated to service of our country,” Cross said. “It’s a unique opportunity that allows us nobility and dignity. Everyone deserves to recognize and reflect on the close bond linking our military families.”

Where are People Moving?

What will be the top origins and destinations of U-Haul customers this moving season? Migration trends always pique the public’s interest.

One-way truck, trailer and U-Box® transactions determine the leading growth states, provinces, metros, and cities that U-Haul announces at the end of each calendar year.

The U-Haul Growth Index recapping 2024 moves revealed South Carolina was the leading growth state with the largest gain of arrivals over departures. Texas, North Carolina, Florida and Tennessee were top five growth states. California had the biggest net loss of one-way movers, while Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania ranked among the last five states for growth.

The Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington area was the No. 1 growth metro, and Ocala (Fla.) was the leading U.S. city for in-migration. Alberta and Calgary topped the U-Haul growth rankings for provinces and cities in Canada, respectively.

Stay tuned for 2025 updates and be sure to check your neighborhood to see if the U-Haul trucks are coming or going.

PHOENIX (April 29, 2025) — Production has begun on the U-Haul® Toy Hauler, the first addition to the Company’s rental fleet of American-made trailers in 23 years.

The Toy HaulerSM is designed for towing large-capacity vehicles and practically anything else that requires a massive flatbed.

This multi-use transport is a steroidal ascent from anything else in the U-Haul trailer fleet. The Toy Hauler’s deck is nearly two feet wider and four feet longer than the U-Haul Auto Transport. Boasting a max load of 6,834 pounds, the Toy Hauler’s carry capacity is also nearly 30% greater than the Auto Transport’s max load of 5,290 pounds.

Three easy-use retractable loading ramps, drive-over fenders and hundreds of heavy-duty tie-down points make the Toy Hauler the perfect solution for towing racecars, side-by-sides (S x S), trikes, and the vast majority of large pickups and SUVs on the road today.

“Customer response has been fantastic,” said Jasmine Spencer, U-Haul Towing Program manager. “With more people needing to move large items like side-by-sides, tractors, building supplies and even hot tubs, the Toy Hauler is a game-changer. Looking at the number of SUVs and trucks that families own, we saw a clear need for trailers that can handle these bigger loads.”

Now Available at Various Locations

Initial production runs are occurring now in Tempe, Ariz., Pomona, Calif., Novi, Mich., and Warrington, Pa. The first 1,000 trailers will be manufactured by mid-summer. Plans call for 5,000 to be ready by the end of 2025.

Toy Haulers are already available for rent at some U-Haul locations for in-town and one-way use, with one-way rentals fueling distribution across the U.S. and Canada.

Rent a Toy Hauler on the U-Haul app or go to: uhaul.com/Trailers/16ft-Flatbed-Utility-Car-Trailer-Rental/TH. In-town rates start at $89.95 a day.

The introduction of the Toy Hauler won’t affect the existing U-Haul fleet. Every trailer previously available will remain for rent, with no inventory scheduled to be sold or decommissioned.

Anniversary Rollout

The Toy Hauler debuts as U-Haul celebrates its 80th anniversary of meeting the public’s mobility needs. The industry leader in do-it-yourself moving and self-storage was founded by a U.S. Navy veteran and his wife in the summer of 1945 as WWII was nearing an end. Joe Shoen, son of the founders, has served as U-Haul Chairman since 1986 — nearly half the Company’s lifespan.

It’s a rare occasion when U-Haul introduces a new truck or trailer to its rental fleet. Its last trailer addition came in 2002 with the Ramp Trailer, an open 5x9 utility trailer that U-Haul made available for one-way rentals. Its last truck addition was the reintroduction of the 20-foot “TT” model box truck in 2011, which was previously available in the 1960s and 70s. U-Haul trucks range in size from 10 to 26 feet.

Spencer noted U-Haul will work to get Toy Haulers into racing communities and markets where there is steady demand for large trucks, SUVs, ATVs and UTVs. Outside of the production areas in Arizona, California, Michigan and Pennsylvania, states that can expect to see an inflow of the trailer include Colorado, Florida, North Carolina and Texas.

Specs and Uses

The Toy Hauler’s deck is 16 feet, 1¼ inches long and 8 feet, 2½ inches wide. The overall trailer length is 23 feet, 8 inches including the tongue, and spans nearly 31 feet with its back ramps extended for vehicle loading and unloading. Deck height is just over two feet off the ground.

With an unladen weight of 3,165 pounds and a max load of 6,834 pounds, the Toy Hauler’s gross vehicle max weight is 9,999 pounds.

Jeff Korman, director of the U-Haul Technical Center in Tempe, noted the size and carry capacity of the Toy Hauler make it applicable for any number of consumer uses, from transporting hot tubs and lumber to loading up toys for off-roading excursions and track days.

“It started out as a trailer to haul vehicles that wouldn’t fit our current offers,” Korman said. “As the design evolved, we saw the possibilities and needs beyond larger SUVs and longer-wheelbase trucks. A third ramp was added for three-wheeled motorcycles and other items that need a center loading ramp.

“The Toy Hauler is great for track days, car shows and side-by-side weekends. Not everyone owns a trailer for their toys. Renting a trailer is a perfect option.”

Will Your SUV or Truck Fit?

With certain limitations and exceptions, here is a sampling of the vehicles that can be accommodated by the U-Haul Toy Hauler that would not fit on its Auto Transport: BMW X7, Cadillac Escalade, Chevy Avalanche, Chevy Silverado 1500-3500, Chevy Suburban, Chevy Tahoe, Dodge Durango, Ford F150-F350, GMC Sierra 1500-3500, GMC Yukon, Jeep Gladiator, Lamborghini Urus, Land Rover Defender, Land Rover Range Rover, Mercury Park Lane, Nissan Armada, Pontiac Star Chief, Porsche Cayenne, Porsche Macan, Rolls Royce Phantom, Tesla Model X, Tesla Cybertruck, Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Tundra, and Vinfast VF9. Update (3/17): U-Haul Co. of Cincinnati announced that its 13 owned-and-operated centers are available to provide 30 days of free self-storage and U-Box to residents affected by the flooding from storms that hit over the weekend. Of the 13 U-Haul centers, 11 are in Ohio (seven in Cincinnati) and two are in northern Kentucky. Stop by any store or call the Cincinnati team (regional office numbers listed below) to reserve a month of free services. The number of stores now offering the U-Haul disaster relief program across the U.S. stemming from this weather system is 379.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (March 16, 2025) — U-Haul® has made 366 Company stores available to help storm victims with 30 days of free self-storage and U-Box® container usage after a powerful weather system produced deadly tornadoes, fires, flooding and wind damage across a line of states Friday through Sunday morning.

The storms destroyed homes and property – and in some cases communities – while the tornado outbreak was responsible for a number of casualties. Many families remain without power and face a long rebuilding process.

Access to dry and secure self-storage units and portable storage containers can assist communities during the clean-up process.

U-Haul offered free storage at 16 centers on Saturday in Oklahoma following an outbreak of more than 130 wildfires, and at three centers on Friday in Texas after damaging winds from the same weather system.

Now 29 U-Haul regional presidents in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee have extended the Company’s disaster relief program to accommodate anyone in need with one month of self-storage services at no cost.

That adds 347 new locations (listed below) to the 19 sites previously designated in Oklahoma and Texas. Find a U-Haul facility near you at uhaul.com/locations.

The 30 days free offer applies to new self-storage and U-Box rentals and is based on availability. The U-Box portable container offer is for on-site storage at Company facilities. People seeking more information on the disaster relief program or needing to arrange storage services can call their nearest regional office or visit any U-Haul-owned facility in a participating state and city:

PHOENIX, Ariz. and CALGARY, Alta. (Jan. 13, 2025) — Alberta is the leading Canadian growth province for the second straight year, according to U-Haul® Growth Index data analyzing for one-way customer transactions during 2024.

Alberta’s two largest cities, Calgary and Edmonton, are also the top two growth cities in Canada. Calgary was the No. 1 U-Haul growth city for 2023 as well.

British Columbia ranks second among provinces for netting U-Haul customers, while Ontario is again last with the greatest loss of do-it-yourself movers.

“People are moving to Alberta because of the opportunities and investments being made in the province,” stated Naga Chennamsetty, U-Haul Area District Vice President. “The cost of living is not as bad as compared to some other provinces. You have the Canadian Rockies and lots of recreational activities. It’s all of these factors. And it’s not really international migration that brings people to Alberta — it’s interprovincial migration.

“I also think people are still moving to British Columbia because it is beautiful and offers a slower, laid-back lifestyle.”

U-Haul calculates growth cities and provinces by net gain (or loss) of one-way equipment from customer transactions in a calendar year. The U-Haul Growth Index is compiled from well over 2.5 million one-way U-Haul truck, trailer and U-Box® moving container transactions that occur annually across Canada and the U.S.

Alberta markets like Calgary, Edmonton and Medicine Hat attracted families with jobs, low taxes and affordable housing. Of all U-Haul customers coming and going in Alberta, 51.2% of traffic was incoming and 48.8% outgoing in 2024.

In Ontario, 50.7% of one-way U-Haul traffic was leaving the province. However, Ontario still boasted 16 of Canada’s top 25 growth cities.

“Ontario will always be the economic heart of Canada and has so much to offer its residents,” explained Jake Spelic, U-Haul Area District Vice President. “What is interesting on our growth cities list is that all the top destinations in Ontario are smaller cities, and most are considered four-season recreational areas. The trend seems to be people are looking for more affordable housing in popular recreational areas with less hustle and bustle than the larger cities.”

While U-Haul migration trends do not correlate directly to population or economic growth, the U-Haul Growth Index is an effective gauge of how well cities and provinces are attracting and maintaining residents.

U-Haul is the authority on migration trends thanks to its expansive network that blankets all 10 Canadian provinces and 50 American states. The geographical coverage from 23,000 U-Haul truck- and trailer-sharing locations provides a broad overview of where people are moving like no one else in the industry.

U-Haul continues to benefit the environment through its shared-use business model. Truck and trailer sharing enables communities to share moving equipment so that families and individuals don’t need to own large-capacity vehicles to transfer belongings. Sustainability initiatives like U-Haul Adaptive Reuse (the preserving and repurposing of existing buildings for new stores), truck modifications to improve fuel economy, and plastic Ready-To-Go Boxes® that are shared hundreds of times before being recycled are among the ways U-Haul promotes green business. U-Box Load Share, the Company’s latest sustainability program, continues to receive awards for providing environmentally friendly solutions to today’s gig economy.
