As we updated you in June, Texas Senate Bill 17 (SB 17), related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) on university campuses, will go into effect Jan. 1, 2024. Our SB 17 working group is diligently determining how best to implement the changes the new law requires. Additionally, UT System has developed SB 17 Working Guidance Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) to serve as a helpful resource.
While there are many details to be finalized, over the next few months you can expect to see the following changes at UTA to comply with SB 17:
|
- Creation of the Intercultural Student Engagement Center, which will integrate efforts across academic and student affairs to further foster student success;
- Renaming the Office of Talent, Culture, and Engagement (TCE) to reflect our employee-centered mission and focus on positive employee engagement;
- Establishment of a University-wide Belonging and Engagement Council with representation from across campus;
-
Expansion of Employee Resource Groups, which are voluntary, member-led groups that share a common purpose, background, or activity and are aligned with UTA’s mission; and
- Updates to our websites, hiring practices, and required training, where applicable.
|
Additionally, we will provide updates and implementation resources on the TCE website. If you have any additional questions or would like to request a departmental consultation, please email TCE’s Belonging and Engagement team at BEUTA@uta.edu.
I have heard from many in our campus community about this shift and its potential for impact on our University community. I believe wholeheartedly in UTA. I know that we, as one campus community, will continue to thrive and embrace who we are, comply with the law, and continue to advance on our mission.
