#DYK for #ChesapeakeBayAwarenessWeek 💧 In 2024, Pennsylvania removed 27 dams, making it the leading state for dam removals. These dam removal projects benefit rivers by improving fish passage and by making navigation safer for paddlers and swimmers. Across the country, more than 2,528 miles of river were reconnected in 2024. How can dam removal help the Chesapeake Bay watershed? • Eliminates sediment and pollution traps • Reestablishes natural river flows and ecological processes, including access to floodplain and seasonal variations in water levels that help maintain healthy riparian areas • Improves fish migration for many species including trout and the American eel, which serves as a host species for the elliptio mussel, which filters the water • Boosts recreational opportunities such as fishing, boating, kayaking, and canoeing Get a closer look on aquatic connectivity! https://lnkd.in/e2vb3e9Q

May 31st is National Dam Safety Awareness Day 💧 Dam Safety Awareness Day is a reminder of the vital importance of maintaining our dam infrastructure and the collective responsibility we share in protecting public safety. The day honors the memory of when 2,200 lives lost in the 1889 Johnstown Flood when the South Fork Dam failed – a tragedy that underscores why vigilance, maintenance, and awareness matter. As we reflect on the past, we look forward – with ongoing work to ensure our dams remain strong, secure, and resilient.
