Thank you for your interest in joining Emory Secular Students (ESS)! As a new organization, this form serves to gather interest from students, mainly who is interested and how many!
Our main goal is to foster community for Emory University's nonreligious students such as atheists, agnostics, secular humanists, and religious students who are questioning their faith from a non-religious lens and would like a safe space to do so. While we value inclusivity and the contributions of diverse perspectives, it is important to set clear guidelines about the club's purpose and focus:
Non-Religious Perspective: Our discussions center on questioning and exploring ideas from a non-religious viewpoint, meaning that they are grounded in reason and evidence without reliance on religious texts or doctrines.
Respect for Non-Religious Experiences: This club provides a safe space for those who have questioned or moved away from religion to share their experiences openly. We ask all members to respect the non-religious nature of these discussions and refrain from proselytizing or promoting religious beliefs within this context.
Understanding Experiences from a Secular Perspective: This club is a space for members to share their personal journeys of questioning or moving away from religion. It is not intended to be a forum for proving or disproving religious beliefs. We prioritize understanding life through a secular lens, focusing on how non-religious perspectives shape our experiences. While we welcome diverse backgrounds, discussions should center on personal insights rather than theological debates or attempts to persuade others of religious viewpoints. This ensures a supportive environment where all members feel comfortable sharing without the conversation shifting to religious arguments.
