In 1999, Emory Muslim Alumni established the platform for an award dedicated to the local community and broader Ummah. Foundational considerations include maintaining broad student appeal, attractive financial incentives, strong educational focus, and a comprehensive approach inclusive of Oxford, Emory College, and Emory’s graduate programs to expand Emory’s Muslim award recognition to a larger global audience. Today, Emory University Muslim Service Award (EMSA) embodies religion, the human spirit, and community service. EMSA serves to further strengthen community, increase awareness of Islam, and incorporate multi-national cultures into the fabric of society through a dedicated focus on community service. A distinct goal of EMSA is to educate the broader public regarding Islam’s focus on humanitarian service and significant impact Muslims undertake to improve lives of global citizens.
