Olivia Lane has been quickly making a name for herself as one of the fastest rising talents in the business. She has been named to many of the “Artists To Watch” lists, and when you hear her debut EP, I think you will understand why.

There’s a definite contemporary sheen to this disc, as radio should have no problem picking out a few songs that will keep its’ listeners entertained, but she also dazzles with a down-home charm that will be sure to win over a few more fans as well.

Take “Lightning,” the opener, for example. The first part of the song definitely has a traditional sound before giving way to a more modern feel. But, all along the way, Lane’s voice keeps you entertained with just enough twang to remind you of Sara Evans. That current polish also extends itself to “My Heartache,” which is the most radio-ready song on the album – though I also think that “There’s A Guy” could win over some programmers with its’ fresh and vibrant sound.

Just as impressive as the vocals are on this record is the songwriting, she strikes a flirtatious mode with “Keychain,” and offers a positive and fun vibe with the recent single “Make My Own Sunshine.” She also details how it feels to go through a “Quarter Life Crisis.” (Hey, middle-agers like myself aren’t the only ones who are allowed to wonder about life’s little mysteries, right?)

As usual, when I dedicate the final paragraph to a song, you know there is a reason why. “She Fits” is without a doubt the top song here, from a lyrical standpoint. The words of the song detail that there are times that a relationship just doesn’t work from other side. But, that doesn’t (and shouldn’t) mean that one can’t be happy for the other when they have found the one that fulfills their destiny. Lane really outdid herself with this one.

The great thing about the career of Olivia Lane is that her live show is just as free-wheeling and energetic as this EP – and at the end of the day, both are going to go a long way towards determining her potential as an artist. From my ears, it’s very much through the roof!
