- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2025Wonderful lyrics funny and poignant - my favorite is Call the Smithsonian/I made a Discovery...
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2024I love these guys! Stumbled on "No Hard Feelings" on Youtube when I was literally on my deathbed and it touches me so much. Better now and just saw them in concert!

Every song is a WINNER!
Americana music at its BEST!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2016The Brothers and beautiful/awesome Band have made another great album with no stinkers at all! This one starts out with a magnificent orchestra sound in an almost tropical or nautical feel, but then switches up almost immediately into pure pleasure. The 2nd song, "Fisher Road to Hollywood" is vintage style Avetts and thanks for the shout out to Newport News!! There's definitely some experimentation on this too, one song in particular, "Victims Of Love", to me sounded a bit like a cross between tropical style Buffet and/or a Spanish-style (from Spain...) street folk song or what might be heard in a local Cervecia there. Scott's banjo sends chills up my spine on "I Wish I Was" along with Seth's guitar and sweet voice, what every Avett Bros fan can't help but love! On very first listen I wasn't too crazy about the synth or whatever at the very beginning of "You Are Mine", but loving it now since there's so much to that song and it's played and sung so beautifully. I just have to remember they want to stretch out and not create song after song that is typical for them and their style. I could go on and on with this one, but think you ALL should preview or buy NOW! I preordered the MP3 version, but now will most likely buy a vinyl copy so I/we can hear the "True" sound curves on this album. We can't wait to go see them again on August 12th at the Portsmouth Pavilion, we are so happy and thrilled they're returning again this year to our favorite Hampton Roads venue and looking forward to hearing and seeing these songs LIVE! We NEVER miss any of the Avett Brothers/Band shows in our area.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2016It's probably hard to live and perform music in a world where half of the people willing to write a review are disappointed and gnash their teeth if a band refines their sound and become ... Better. I'm reading these reviews and find it laughable how some reviewers blame Rubin for the Avett Brothers growing up, feeling pain, loss, and becoming better musicians. Dammit, they don't sound like they did when they were 20yo college kids, this album must suck. Whatever.
There was a lot of grit and rawness to their early stuff. Agreed, this is far more polished... But it also is edgy and has the standard Avett-ness with couple of songs that are definitely different than your standard Avett faire. This is no different than Carpenter. But these boys are now men, growing, still have some traditional country sound, and damn can these boys throw down some bitching ballads. They are still killer at melody, and lace banjo with with classy and oft haunting cello work. They still have the most amazing non-traditional harmonies that still make you want to sing and at times, cry. Damn that Rubin for allowing them to maintain the things that they are really, really good at.
If you are a fan, or like an Avett song or two, and don't EXPECT or hope that 40yo men will suddenly sound like they did when they were 20... Then this album will fit like your favorite t-shirt. It smells, sounds like, tastes and feels all things Avett. They are good at being who they are and anyone who states otherwise is confused, unrealistic, or unhappy with their lives.
Get this album, it's better than Carpenter.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2022Sure there’s lots of criticism around the recent evolution of the Avett brothers, but what artists who have been creating work for years don’t have a few so-so pieces. Not every Kehinde Wiley piece is of the magnitude and impact of his portrait of Obama. Not every novel by Toni Morrison packs the emotional force of The Bluest Eye or Beloved. You have to have a few “OK, that was OK.” This collection is a combination of wonder work and OK, but you never finish a song thinking: “Why that one?”
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2016Sometimes an album needs to grow on me, but this was not the case with True Sadness. I fell in love with this album almost immediately with that awesome bass line of the first track. While the Avett Brothers have remained true to their signature sound, they have also evolved in songs such as "Ain't No Man" and "Victims Of Life", both of which sound like they were trying something new and were successful in taking the risk. Whether you are a long-time fan, or listening to them for the first time, True Sadness is a yet another great example of how talented these guys really are. From the truly poetic lyrics and soothing melodies of "I Wish I Was" and "Fisher Road To Hollywood" to the rockin' bluegrass feel of "Satan Pulls The Strings" this album has a little bit of everything. My personal favorite song is "No Hard Feelings", but I can honestly listen to this whole album on repeat and be very content. It will be a sad day when these guys call it quits, because they continue to put out enjoyable, creative and soulful music. In a day where many artists don't write their own music and auto-tune their voices, The Avett Brothers continue to craft music that sounds uniquely and distinctly their own. I truly love this band.
P.S. - Go see them live if you already haven't. They are incredible in concert.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh Jams
My personal favorite of the post "I and Love and You" era. Ain't No Man is super catchy, Smithsonian is great and the rest of the album is fresh. I love the tri fold record case. The interior graphics are beautiful.
Delivered a day early and worth every penny.

3.0 out of 5 stars bluegrass-folk

5.0 out of 5 stars Divorce Separation Blues
