Editorial Reviews
2016 release from the Grammy-nominated country artist. Says Hayes:"I'm a singer-songwriter. I think Lovers And Leavers comes closer to reflecting that than any other record I've made. I didn't worry about checking boxes, making sure there was something here for everybody, or getting on the radio. I just took some much needed deep breaths and let them out on tape. With these songs in hand, I needed a co-conspirator to help me get them to you. I called on Joe Henry, a gentleman poet and an elegant artist who seemed a trustworthy steward for my collection. We recorded this record live in five days, using just an acoustic guitar, a mix of bass, percussion, pianos and organs, and a touch of pedal steel. Lovers And Leavers isn't funny or raucous. There are very few hoots and almost no hollers. But it is joyous, and it makes me smile. No, it's not my Blood On The Tracks, nor is it any kind of opus. It's my fifth record a reflection of a specific time and place. It is quiet, like I wanted it to be."

- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2016It feels like this whole album is a shift for Hayes Carll. Lovers and Leavers sounds like the work of a man who has learned a lot, lived a lot and who isn't afraid to be a little introspective. Almost from the start, you can't shake of the Townes Van Zandt feel-I mean, Sake of a Song could have been a Townes song, but it is quintessential Hayes Carll from a slightly different point of view. Songs like Good While It Lasted and The Love That What Need are songs that turn the traditional "lost love" ballads on their ear and are as matter of fact and honest as any songs you'll ever here. You can't really listen to this album and not think that you know exactly how Hayes is feeling when he sings it and writes it. He wrote an album that all of us can relate to, which seems strikingly rare these days.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2016This is an intimate album and perhaps Hayes Carll's most honest and personal. At the same time, it is not confessional. The songs transcend the particular and approach the universal thanks to Carll's deft use of allusion. Anyone well versed in American poetry and song will recognize the references that range from Robert Frost to Tom Waits. Carll is a songwriter's songwriter with a tremendous range of influences. He also has a passionate muse. He does it all for the sake of the song, and all of these songs work and work together to make a powerful and thoughtful statement.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2017I can't remember how I came across this album; perhaps I saw Mr. Carll sing something on TV and thought, "whoa".
I'm not familiar with his other work, but there are some finely crafted songs here that both make a first impression and bear repeated listening. The remarkable generation of Texas/Nashville singer/songwriters I grew up with is getting old and dying. Wikipedia says he's been compared to Townes Van Zandt, but the songs on this album remind me more of a (good) cross between Guy Clark and Don Schlitz in terms of being carefully crafted, sometimes sentimental, and hitting their mark strongly, sometimes with southern understatement. Give it a listen.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2022Love Hayes's music. very soulful and original!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2016Let me start by saying Hayes was my favorite musician for a number of years. I own all albums and have seen him live 4 times, but was apprehensive about purchasing this album as I heard "Magic Kid" live a few years back. I thought it was kind of lame and came back to Idaho from Portland and warned my gal about what I had heard. Then when I read that the mood of this album was based on that song I was concerned to say the least.
Hayes owes me nothing, but I am the guy stomping around in the crowd having a blast to some of his more rowdy numbers. If you are like me, you will find this release deflating. I love his soulful songs like "Hide Me" and the there are a few quality numbers on this CD, but it is massively melancholy. If this is what having kids does to a person, sign me up for a vasectomy. I hope, hope, hope, it grows on me--but this is an honest initial impression. Man I hope Sturgill doesn't disappoint next week, because he also has an album coming out that is dedicated to his son!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2016Less raucous than his other albums, and less overtly humorous, if you're familiar with his work.
If you're not, buy this album along with "KMAG YOYO" to get the full picture.
This is Carll at his most introspective. To me, this album is reminscent of John Prine's "Sweet Revenge" or "Bruised Orange." Clever lyrics mixed with rueful (borderline depressive) tones. A sweet contradiction.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2016Love this CD! I'm a fan of Hayes already and this CD is the top of my list at the moment. It is softer and sweeter than his earlier work but still full of quirky lyrics that make you think and laugh. Hayes is a unique writer and singer who is clearly growing as a human being. And in the process, he is making great new songs! I love it!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 27, 2016Really liked this quiet introspective. A bit of a departure, but sounds like it made sense for where Carll is at this point in his life. Probably had to do this to heal and move on. Looking forward to more from a guy who is destined for an important place among Texas singer-song writers.

4.0 out of 5 stars drunken poet
Joe Henry
Darrell Scott、Will Hoge、J.D.Souther、Jack Ingram、Jim Lunderdale等々、魅力的なSSWとの共同ペンによる全10曲。

5.0 out of 5 stars Take it slow

1.0 out of 5 stars Disco de doblado
No recomendable.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sober poets dream
When I think of Hayes Carll I think of the rough and rowdy crowd pleasing foot stompers like Drunken Poets Dream,Stomp and Holler or KMAG YOYO.This album has nothing like those songs, five years since his last album Hayes has given us a more introspective sound. He may not be a drunken poet now but he's still a poet just a grown up one.You wonder if Hayes has had to suffer a bit for his art here,Sake Of The Song might suggest he has.Good While It Lasted finds him reflecting on the past without regret but realising it's time to move on.
Although they are all pretty much slow tempo acoustic songs it never gets boring there is more than just Hayes' excellent guitar picking out the melodies with some nice piano, steel guitar and organ cutting in to hold the attention and give some variety and of course all sung in that laid back Texan drawl that just lulls you into the songs. The centrepiece of the album is probably The Magic Kid - check out the video on YouTube- written about his nine year old sons love of performing magic.A proud dad indeed.
An album that demands to be listened to properly, have a quiet hour get the earphones on and reflect on life and love with Hayes Carll
