The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) welcomed two new head basketball coaches – Mick Hedgepeth for the men’s team and Allen Sharpe for the women’s – to the UAH Department of Athletics with a ceremony on April 16 at Spragins Hall. UAH is a part of The University of Alabama System.

Hedgepeth becomes the 10th head coach in UAH men’s basketball program history. Most recently, he led the men’s basketball team at Berry College since 2022 with a record of 44-14.

“As a native Alabamian who grew up attending Charger camps, clinics and games, I could not be more excited to now lead a program that I’ve always respected and admired,” Hedgepeth said. “I am extremely appreciative of the opportunity to embrace, cultivate and build upon the tradition of excellence – both on and off the floor – alongside our staff, student-athletes and community.”

In his time at Berry, Hedgepeth coached seven CSC Academic All-District honorees, two all-district performers and six all-conference awardees. He was also named Southern Athletic Association Coach of the Year in 2022-23, while leading the Vikings to an SAA Championship and an NCAA Division III tournament appearance in 2023-24.

Overall, Hedgepeth has four years of head coaching experience and a career record of 80-32. Along with his time at Berry, he also had a two-season stint at Sewanee from 2017-19.

Sharpe becomes the 13th head coach of the UAH women’s basketball team after leading both the Wallace State College’s men’s and women’s teams in 2023-24.

“This is a position that I had my eye on for quite some time and a responsibility that I will not take lightly,” Sharpe said. “The time is now for UAH women’s basketball to thrive in the Gulf South Conference and the South Region. Go, Chargers!”

Sharpe’s teams at Wallace State combined for three All-ACCC honorees this season. The men’s team won the ACCC Division I tournament, and the women’s squad were runners-up. His men’s squad also made it to the second round of the 2024 NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship.

In a career that spans 22 years, Sharpe owns a record of 496-210 following a 25-6 record with Wallace State’s women’s squad this season to go along with a 26-9 mark on the men’s side.
