From Baltimore's Streets to Defensive Line Dominance: Robert Horsey's Journey to Success

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Robert Horsey, a graduate transfer defensive lineman who comes to Southern Utah University (SUU) from Frostburg State, has faced numerous challenges throughout his life. Growing up in a single-parent household in Baltimore City, Horsey witnessed the devastating impact of drug addiction within his family. However, instead of succumbing to anger and despair, Horsey found solace and inspiration on the football field, where he developed into a formidable force and a beacon of hope.

"My upbringing wasn't easy," Horsey reflects. "But I'm grateful for everything I've been through because it shaped me into who I am today." Coach DeLane Fitzgerald said of Horsey, "Robert is a good young man who has overcome many obstacles in his life. It has become a cliché these days for coaches to talk about what their players have overcome in life, but Robert is a real-life success story fighting through the trials and tribulations of growing up in inner-city Baltimore". Fitzgerald went on to say, "Robert is going to come out the other side of his college career as a success story. He will be someone that's going to be able to go home and make a positive change in his environment."

Football became Horsey's outlet for channeling his anger and overcoming the obstacles in his life. His exceptional skills and dominance on the field caught the attention of college recruiters, leading him to Frostburg State initially. However, when several former teammates and coaches made the move to SUU, Horsey stayed to finish his senior season as a Bobcat.

The decision to stay didn't come easy, but the year allowed Horsey to grow and become a leader on the field. Horsey led the Frostburg State the most of last season compiling 60 tackles including 9 tackles for a loss and 2.5 sacks. Following the breakout season Horsey elected to take advantage of his extra year of eligibility and continue his football journey with one more season under the tutelage of Coach Fitzgerald.

The transition to a new team and a new environment was not without its challenges, but Horsey's determination and the welcoming nature of his teammates made the adjustment smoother. Despite the disparities between his hometown and Cedar City, Horsey found camaraderie and support with his new brothers on the team, who made his integration into the squad seamless.

On the defensive line, Horsey's position as a defensive tackle has allowed him to shine under the coaching of Coach Kelling. Known for his strategic approach and the ability to put players in optimal positions, Kelling's defensive philosophy has provided Horsey with the opportunity to make impactful plays on the field.

"Coach Kelling is like a wizard," Horsey explains. "He draws up plays that give me the chance to make a difference. It's up to me to seize those opportunities."

While competing for a starting position on the team, Horsey has embraced the heightened level of competition at the Division I level. He has dedicated himself to improving his skills through relentless hard work, both in the weight room and on the field. Horsey has even become a duel threat adding a new skillset to his toolbag. Coach Fitzgerald said of his versatility, "Robert is one of the best interior defensive linemen I have ever coached. His ability to shut the run down in the middle of the field on running plays, and then transition and rush the QB on pass plays is as good as I have ever seen.  Also, this fall Robert will be playing H back/tight end in Short yardage and goal-line situations on offense. Making him the only two-way player in the UAC conference, and one of the only two-way players in all of college football."

Horsey acknowledges that confidence and self-belief are crucial in achieving success and proving himself on this bigger stage.

"I've got a lot to prove, not only to others but also to myself," Horsey affirms. "I compete with myself every day, pushing for that 1% improvement. I have to believe in my abilities before I can expect others to believe in me."

As the upcoming season approaches, Horsey is eager to showcase his talent and determination against tough opponents. Coming from a small school and transitioning to Division I football, he carries a burning desire to prove himself against all odds. Every game on the schedule holds significance for Horsey, who sees each opportunity as a chance to demonstrate his abilities to the world.

Off the field, Horsey has found a supportive community in Cedar City. The welcoming nature of the people, a stark contrast to his experiences back home, has made a lasting impression on him. The sense of belonging and the genuine kindness he has encountered have added to his appreciation for his new surroundings.

Horsey remains grateful for the opportunities that football has provided. With a determined spirit and an unwavering commitment to self-improvement, he stands poised to make a lasting impact both on and off the field, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and triumph over adversity.

His compelling story and tenacious spirit make Robert Horsey not only a force on the defensive line but also a symbol of hope and inspiration for those facing their own personal battles. As he continues to chase his dreams at Southern Utah University, the world can eagerly await the next chapter in his remarkable journey.
