3 dead in Bunn-O-Matic shooting; suspect found dead in vehicle

UPDATE (8:12 p.m. 6/27/20:

The third victim in the Bunn-O-Matic shooting has been pronounced dead.

UPDATE (6:12 p.m. 6/26/20):

Springfield Police Chief Kenny Winslow said the suspect, Michael L. Collins, died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Collins had a valid Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card.

Prior to Friday, the Springfield Police Department's last encounter with Collins was in June 1991.

Springfield Police and Illinois State Police are still at the scene. Investigators are still conducting interviews.

Police are not looking for any more suspects in the shooting.

The status of the victim in critical condition has not changed.

Winslow said at the time of the shooting, approximately 175 people were inside the entire facility, which consists of several structures.

UPDATE (4:42 p.m. 6/26/20):

The reunification site at Magro's Meat is closing, as there are no more Bunn-O-Matic employees on the scene.

Stevenson Drive is back open to traffic between Stanton and 11th Streets.

UPDATE (4:17 p.m. 6/26/20:

Morgan County Sheriff Mike Carmody said a resident called about a suspicious vehicle at approximately 1:20 p.m. on Friday. The caller did not recognize the vehicle.

At 1:27 p.m., authorities arrived to the scene.

Springfield Police received a report from the Morgan County Sheriff's Office at 1:49 p.m., saying the suspect in the Bunn-O-Matic shooting was found dead in his vehicle.

Illinois State Police is taking over the scene.

UPDATE (3:14 p.m. 6/26/20):

The suspect in the Bunn-O-Matic shooting has been found dead in his vehicle in Morgan County.

In a press briefing, Springfield Police identified the suspect as Michael L. Collins, 48, of Springfield.

Three people were shot. Two men are dead and one woman is in critical condition.

All victims and the suspect were employees of Bunn-O-Matic.

Springfield Police said they received a report of multiple shots fired at 11:03 a.m. on Friday.

SPD authorities arrived to the scene approximately one minute after the report.

Two victims were found inside the building and one was found in the parking lot.

Police said Collins fled the scene before they arrived. They said he used a handgun in the shooting.

Then, police received a report from the Morgan County Sheriff's Office at 1:49 p.m., saying Collins was found dead in his vehicle.

Collins was found on Leach Farm Road, near U.S. Route 67 in Morgan County.

Police could not confirm if Collins died by suicide, whether he used the same gun for victims and possibly himself, or the exact type of gun.

Springfield Police Chief Kenny Winslow did not have an exact number of how many people were in the building, but he expects the number exceeds 100.

The Sangamon County Coroner's Office said autopsies for the two deceased victims will take place on Saturday. They will be identified following the autopsies and after next of kin are notified.

The Morgan County Coroner will conduct an autopsy for Collins.

The shooting remains under investigation.

Another press conference will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday.

UPDATE (1:31 p.m. 6/26/20):

Springfield Police said Bunn-O-Matic employees can reunite with their families in the parking lot of Magro's Meat, located at 3150 Stanton St. in Springfield.

The general public is asked to stay away from the area while employees are reunited with their families.

Stevenson Drive remains closed to traffic between Stanton and 11th Streets.

UPDATE (1:19 p.m. 6/26/20):

Springfield Police confirmed one person was shot at Bunn-O-Matic.

The building has been evacuated.

Police are still looking for the shooter. Identifying details about the suspect, including the suspect's sex, have not been confirmed.

Police will hold a press conference at 3 p.m. Friday at the southeast corner of Stevenson Drive and 11th Street.
