Suspect in Mass. state trooper's shooting killed in shootout with US Marshals in NY
A man wanted in connection with the shooting of a Massachusetts State Police trooper was shot and killed Friday during a confrontation with U.S. Marshals in New York, 5 Investigates reports.
Andre K. Sterling, 35, was wanted on charges including armed assault with intent to murder in the Nov. 20 shooting of Trooper John Lennon, who suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
Sterling was shot and killed during the confrontation in the Bronx. Two deputy U.S. Marshals with the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force suffered gunshot wounds in the shootout. The marshals were rushed to Jacobi Hospital, where they are in stable condition.
A New York Police Department detective was also injured while trying to help the marshals.
A second suspect, who lives in the apartment where the shootout happened, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Four Massachusetts State Police Troopers -- two members of the Department’s Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section and two members from the State Police Detective Unit for the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office -- were present at the scene of the shooting, officials said. The troopers were maintaining a perimeter to ensure the safety of the public.
Lennon, 28, suffered the gunshot wound to his right hand during a traffic stop in Hyannis. The bullet went through his hand and struck his bulletproof vest in the area of his shoulder.
He was treated for his wounds at Massachusetts General Hospital and later released.
Lennon graduated from the Massachusetts State Police Academy in May.
