Habitat is currently accepting applications for its roof replacement program funded by Orange County Government. The cost of replacing a roof can be so expensive for homeowners. A bad roof can also affect homeowners' insurance coverage. Last year, Orange County homeowner Susan Adams applied for the free Roof Replacement Program after trying to patch her own.“My husband was quite ill. He did a couple of things to try and band-aid it, but it still leaked,” Orange County homeowner Susan Adams said. She got a new roof six months ago. It's all part of a partnership between Habitat for Humanity and Orange County, which is in its fourth year. Now Habitat is accepting a new round of applications for the free program on its website."This program cycle, we're going to be replacing 40 roofs for Orange County residents, and it's a huge need in this community,” said Jennifer Gallagher, Chief Operating Officer of Habitat for Humanity for Greater Orlando and Osceola County. Thousands of dollars per year in community development block grants fund the Roof Replacement Program.Sherry Julien is Program Manager for Housing Rehabilitation and Capital Improvements for Orange County. “The ability to partner with non-profit organizations to help us with this task means that we get to serve so many more clients than we would have on our own,” she said. Even though this program is free, there are certain eligibility requirements. You must own your own home, you must live in Orange County, and be current on your mortgage.Plus, there are income requirements, and certain specialized roof types may not not eligible.Adams says her new roof made a huge difference."My homeowners insurance was able to be replaced by a better company, my insurance costs went down tremendously,” Adams said. She says even her mortgage went down, too."Now I can live there comfortably, makes a big difference, much more than I ever thought I could at this point,” Adams said.
