(From left) Jonathan Levine, Jane Welsh, Kenita Rogers, Eleanor Green, Pete DeBusk, Susan Eades, Jason Johnson, and Bo Connell spent two days exploring potential opportunities that might allow Lincoln Memorial and Texas A&M universities to collaborate.

Two representatives from Lincoln Memorial University (LMU), a private liberal arts college in Harrogate, Tennessee, were given a grand Aggie welcome to the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVM) during a two-day visit June 29-30.

Drs. Pete DeBusk, chairman of the LMU board of trustees, and Jason Johnson, vice president and dean of the LMU CVM, visited Texas A&M, because “they had heard much about what we were doing in veterinary education.”

Dr. Kenita Rogers, CVM executive associate dean, kicked off the packed itinerary by touring the two around the CVM campus, with special stops in the Center for Educational Technologies; the Clinical Skills Laboratory, where they saw a demonstration of the CVM’s 3D anatomy teaching resources; and the Large Animal Hospital.

In the Small Animal Hospital, DeBusk and Johnson learned about the CVM’s innovation in cardiovascular learning and patient care before visiting the Diagnostic Imaging and Cancer Treatment Center and the Veterinary Emergency Team.

Rounding out the CVM portion of the tour was a stop at the Thomas G. Hildebrand, DVM ’56 Equine Complex, hosted by Dr. Jim Heird and Hanna Galloway.

“Dr. Pete DeBusk is clearly passionate about LMU and veterinary medicine. Both he and Dean Jason Johnson have been essential in launching the new veterinary college at LMU and achieving COE accreditation,” said Dr. Eleanor Green, the Carl B. King of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M. “At the end of the day, we shared philosophies and ideas about veterinary education now and into the future, all with similar passion.”

In addition to his role as dean of the LMU CVM, Johnson is an associate professor of theriogenology at LMU and executive director for its Center for Animal and Human Health in Appalachia.

DeBusk is owner and chairman of DeRoyal Industries, one of the most well-known medical device manufacturers in the international health care market. As chairman of the LMU Board of Trustees, he has spearheaded numerous projects including the DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine and the soon-to-open College of Law.
