Working to build an equitable, high-quality health care system in the movement to end homelessness.
About us
The National Health Care for the Homeless Council is the premier national organization working at the nexus of homelessness and health care. Grounded in human rights and social justice, the NHCHC mission is to build an equitable, high-quality health care system through training, research, and advocacy in the movement to end homelessness. We work to improve health care for people experiencing homelessness through training and technical assistance, researching and sharing best practices, advocating for real solutions to end homelessness, and uplifting voices of people experiencing homelessness. Many of our members are Health Care for the Homeless programs, which deliver direct health care and support services to unhoused people. To learn more about HCH programs, read our fact sheet.

On April 1, we'll officially launch our voluntary certification process for recuperative and medical respite care programs! Our Director of Medical Respite Care Julia Dobbins, MSW writes in our Council Updates blog: "In August, I will celebrate 13 years with the Council. For 10 of those years, I’ve been responsible for supporting and expanding our medical respite work. I’ve learned that we are most effective in our work to support programs when we focus on listening, tailoring our response to the specific needs of a program, and bringing providers into our community. The NIMRC Certification process is an example of what the Council does best. We will walk alongside programs in their work to become certified, providing guidance and support throughout." NHCHC Statement: USICH Is an Invaluable Partner In the National Response to Homelessness The National Health Care for the Homeless Council is disappointed by the Trump Administration’s recent Executive Order which seeks to effectively eliminate the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH). The Council has worked alongside USICH through both Democratic and Republican administrations, including the first Trump administration, to address the health care needs of people experiencing homelessness as part of the broader effort to end homelessness. This decision marks a setback in that collective effort, and we recognize the challenges it may pose for communities and partners dedicated to this cause.
