Galloway, N.J. – Stockton University field hockey teammates
Kelsey Andrus (Mays Landing/Oakcrest) and
Rhian Freire (Mays Landing/Cedar Creek) were recognized as
NFHCA Division III Scholars of Distinction by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.
The requirement for this recognition is a cumulative grade point average of 3.90 or higher through the Fall 2021 semester.
Andrus, a senior, earned the NFHCA Scholar of Distinction honor for the fourth consecutive year while Freire, a junior, qualified for the first time in her career. Andrus and Freire headlined a list of 15 Ospreys who attained recognition on the NFHCA National Academic Squad, which was announced last week.
Andrus and Friere both are backs who started all 16 games for a Stockton defense that recorded four shutouts and a 1.63 goals against average during the 2021 season.
Freire was voted NJAC Honorable Mention by the league's coaches for her role as a shutdown defender at outside back. She has started all 21 games over the last two seasons.
In her first year as a full-time starter, Andrus contributed two defensive saves and also notched a goal and two assists at the offensive end for her first four career points. Her first college goal came in the 2021 season opener against Manhattanville. Andrus played in 40 games and started 19 matches in her four seasons as an Osprey.
