Stockton Overtakes Rutgers-Newark Late for 75-71 Win

Newark, N.J. – Stockton University (18-3, 12-2 NJAC) trailed for most of the game but closed with a 21-9 run to prevail 75-71 over host Rutgers-Newark (6-15, 4-10) in the third straight road game for the Ospreys. The victory was the fourth in a row for Stockton.
 
Kyion Flanders (Wildwood/Wildwood) led the Ospreys with team highs of 19 points and seven rebounds. Flanders netted 15 counters in the second half. Kadian Dawkins (Eastampton/Rancocas Valley) shot 7-10 (70%) from the field and scored 15 points.
 
Milo De Los Santos (Pennington/Hopewell Valley) went 4-6 (66.7%) from three-point range for 12 markers. The Ospreys won despite leading for just over seven minutes in the game, and never by more than five points.
 
Stockton managed just 29 points in a slow-paced first half that saw them trail by as much as 10 and lead for only 3:04 of the 20-minute period before going to the locker room down 36-29. Dawkins scored six points and freshman Tayvon Gaither (Mt. Laurel/Lenape) gave the Ospreys a lift with six points off the bench.
 
The Scarlet Raptors led by a slim margin for most of the second half before opening up a 62-54 gap with 7:25 remaining. A three-point play by Rynell Lawrence (Millville/Millville) ignited the decisive 21-9 spurt. Stockton tied it 64-64 on two Flanders free throws at the 4:42 mark and took the lead at 67-64 on a three-pointer by De Los Santos 34 seconds later.
 
Rutgers-Newark got within 69-68 before De Los Santos drained another three-pointer with 1:48 on the clock that made it 72-68 and essentially clinched Stockton's fourth straight win.
 
Although the home team shot a blistering 63.6 percent from the field in the second half, Stockton answered by going 7-11 (63.6%) from three-point range to go with 55.6 percent from the floor overall and 9-11 (81.8%) at the line in the period.
 
Levi Holton scored a game-high 20 points for Rutgers-Newark, followed by Tyrone Bowens with 14 markers and Tony Godwin with 10.
 
With three straight road games behind them, Stockton will start a three-game homestand by hosting Montclair State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
