Age Friendly University (AFU) Update
by Karen Rose, Ph.D., SCOSA AFU champion; adjunct professor, Psychology and Health Science

Karen Rose attended an informative webinar in January 2023 hosted by the Alabama Department of Aging that covered the Providing Alzheimer’s N’ Dementia Assistance Project (PANDA),a comprehensive state-wide project piloted in Alabama in 2019 and funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living (ACL) that provides supportive services, including person-centered care plans, education, and training, for people living with dementia (PLWD), aging adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their caregivers. Currently, an estimated 15.7 million adult family caregivers are caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease, or other dementias in the United States. Many caregivers cannot recognize when they are experiencing the early signs of burn-out. This project is unique as Alabama AAAs are working together to provide consistency in the dementia services provided throughout their areas of the state and are keeping their local and state leaders informed of their work as part of their sustainability planning.  If successful, this model will be helpful to other states navigating support for families struggling with dementia, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and their caregivers.

Strength Training for ALL:
Many of the gerontology courses at Stockton University teach the findings of recent, evidence-based research that explores the keys to staying healthy in late adulthood. Much may be found regarding the benefits of walking and other aerobic activities, but do not forget to strength train! The link below offers information about the value of strength training beyond early and middle adulthood. Note the age of participants in the study included people over the age of 85…be inspired and start your journey to muscle fitness today.

SCOSA Welcomes Trainees in Latest CECC Course

Last week SCOSA welcomed ten trainees from across the nation in the 12th offering of our 15-week online Certificate in Elder Care Coordination (CECC), presented in collaboration with the Life Care Planning Law Firms Association (LCPLFA).  The asynchronous online program, offered via Blackboard, is divided into three 5-week courses designed to better prepare staff from LCPLFA-member firms for their complex jobs.

A Welcome/Get Acquainted Zoom on 1/26 included new trainees from Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Virginia, Michigan, and New York, and included special introductions from attorney Tim Takacs and ECC Deb King, who together conceptualized the LCPLFA model nearly 25 years ago.  SCOSA has trained 18o participants from 30 states since taking over from the University of Florida thanks to the efforts of
then LCPLFA board member, local elder care attorney Michael Weinraub, who has taught a course on aging and the law for Stockton for several years.  The program is currently led by SCOSA director Burdick with assistance from Anne Crozier, CECC with the Bratton Law Group, and professor/SCOSA assistant director Christine Ferri.
