2017 Scientific Meetings

From June 4–7, 2017, AFAR hosted our annual scientific meetings in Santa Barbara, California. Ninety attendees--including AFAR grantees, senior leaders the field, and representatives from foundations--convened to hear reports on AFAR-supported research and share insights on emerging directions in the field.

First, AFAR and The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation co-hosted the New Investigators in Alzheimer’s Disease Grantee Meeting. In addition to featuring panel discussions, research presentations, and Data Blitz sessions, this year’s meeting marked the 10th anniversary of the program.

Attendees celebrated the 10th year of the 2017 New Investigator Awards in Alzheimer’s Disease program.

From June 5-7, the joint Paul F. Glenn/AFAR Conference and the 30th annual AFAR Grantee conference took place. Among the featured speakers were 2014 Glenn/AFAR Breakthroughs in Gerontology Award (BIG) winners, Steve Helfand, MD and Henri Jasper, PhD; AFAR Board President Mark Lachs, MD, MPH; 1985 AFAR Research Grant recipient Richard Miller, MD, PhD; 1983 AFAR Research Grant recipient and the Director of the Division of Aging Biology at the National Institute on Aging, Felipe Sierra, PhD; and 2001 Beeson Scholar and AFAR Glenn/AFAR Postdoctoral Fellow Selection Committee chair Ned Sharpless, MD, who was recently appointed Director of the National Cancer Institute.

2016 grant recipients shared their research during the poster sessions.

The annual meetings were a vital source of networking, scientific exchange, and inspiration, as Jamie Justice, PhD, 2016 Glenn/AFAR Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Translational Research on Aging Fellow, Department of Internal Medicine – Geriatrics, Wake Forest School of Medicine, shared:

“The events afforded me an opportunity to meet current and potential collaborators, and receive timely feedback on projects, which is particularly crucial at my early career stage. Not only this, but the quality and impact of the science presented and related discussions were outstanding - an exceptional meeting.”

AFAR is grateful to The Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Foundation and The Glenn Foundation for Medical Research for their support of these meetings.
