Committee Decision

The City-School Boards Advisory Committee recommends to the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee that:

 

1.  The General Manager, Transportation Services, in consultation with the Directors of the four Toronto school boards, provide an update annually to the City-School Boards Advisory Committee on progress toward implementing and measuring the impact of the Vision Zero Program of road safety initiatives for school zones.

 

2.  The General Manager, Transportation Services identify options and resource implications for expediting implementation of traffic safety measures in school zones as described under the City's Vision Zero Road Safety Plan to all 780 public schools, and report back to Public Works and Infrastructure Committee as part of Transportation Services’ bi-annual update report on the Road Safety Plan in third quarter of 2018.

The City-School Boards Advisory Committee:

 

1.  Requested that the recommendations of the City-School Boards Advisory Committee be submitted to the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee for consideration as part of the Vision Zero update to be considered on November 28, 2017.

Summary

The presentation by City of Toronto Transportation Services staff will provide background on the City's Vision Zero Road Safety Plan with focus on the new Safe School Zones program. It will include details on how schools are being prioritized, what elements are being introduced at each school from an engineering perspective, the data driven enforcement for dangerous driving behaviours in school zones and the new educational awareness program being developed that emphasizes school zone safety as well as promoting active and safe routes to school. There will also be information on the $100,000 funding grant from Partnership for Healthy Cities that will be used to fund the pilot implementation of a complete Safe School Zone at one school and the development of materials to support the educational awareness campaign. The City of Toronto is striving to achieve zero traffic-related fatalities in school zones while promoting safe and active routes to school.
