UN Study on Violence against Children

UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre has been designated as the organization most favoured for the provision of research guidance and support to the global Study of Violence against Children, led by Paulo Sérgio Pinheiro, an Independent Expert appointed by the United Nations Secretary General.
The Study, rooted in children’s human rights to protection from all forms of violence, aims to promote action to prevent and eliminate violence against children at international, regional, national and local level.
IRC is part of the editorial board for the Study and, additionally, provides a venue for discussion and reflection. It is also committed to analysing IRC research relevant to the Study; reviewing the UN and the European standards and mechanisms, the latter in collaboration with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights; reviewing the work of the Global Network of Ombuds Offices; developing creative documentation for the Study, including the development of a proposal for a documentary film on the Study, as well as sharing and identifying academic research documents; providing input and support for the Regional Consultations. Additionally, as an outcome of the expert consultation held at IRC on 10-11 February 2005 on deriving a global estimate for the Study, IRC was designated as the ‘hub’ for work on the estimate.
The Study is a UN-led collaboration, mandated by the General Assembly, to draw together existing research and relevant information about the forms, causes and impact of violence which affects children and young people (up to the age of 18 years). A major report will be published in 2006 and recommendations presented to the UN General Assembly.

Child Poverty in Rich Countries 2005

The proportion of children living in poverty has risen in a majority of the world's developed economies. No matter which of the commonly-used poverty measures is applied, the situation of children is seen to have deteriorated over the last decade. This publication is the sixth in a series of Innocenti Report Cards designed to monitor and compare the performance of the OECD countries in meeting the needs of their children.

A League Table of Child Maltreatment Deaths in Rich Nations

In the industrialized world, approximately 3,500 children die every year at the hands of those who should be caring for them. Many more live on with injuries - both physical and emotional. This fifth Report Card analyses and compares child abuse data from the OECD nations and asks why some countries have a better record than others.

Birth Registration: Right from the Start

This Digest looks at birth registration, a fundamental human right that opens the door to other rights, including education and health care, participation and protection. It explains why the births of more than 50 million babies go unregistered every year. In legal terms, these children do not exist and their right to an official name and nationality is denied. Their access to basic services may be severely jeopardised and they may find themselves more vulnerable to abuse and exploitation.

Early Marriage: Child Spouses

Research into early marriage has tended to concentrate on its impact on reproductive health, school drop-out and rising population figures, and there has been little examination of the practice as a human rights violation in itself. The Digest examines the scale of early marriage, its context, causes and its impact and also outlines strategies for its prevention.
