Schlueter Breaks School Record in 100 Free on Final Day of WIAC Championship

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater swimming and dive teams wrapped up the WIAC Swim and Dive Championships held in Brown Deer, Wisconsin. The men finished fourth overall with a total team score of 467. The women's team finished fourth overall with a total team score of 263. 

The Saturday night finals started off with the men's 1650 freestyle. Caleb Weis (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) improved on his time from the prelims, finishing third overall in the heat. Weis's time of 16:19.56 in the finals ranks as the 6th fastest time in Warhawk history, and the fastest time since 2014.

Brady Peetz (Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger) and Dan Emary (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) competed in the B-Final of the 1650 freestyle. Peetz and Emary placed back-to-back with Peetz finishing 13th overall and Emary 14th. 

For the women, Hannah Wenszell (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Virtual), Gala Boutin (San Antonio, Tex./Smithson Valley), Brianna Zimdars (Whitewater, Wis./Whitewater), and Amanda Harper (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) all competed for the Warhawks in the 1650 freestyle. Wenszell led the group, finishing 10th overall, followed by Gala Boutin (San Antonio, Tex./Smithson Valley) at 13th overall, with Zimdars and Harper finishing 15th and 16th respectively. 

In the next event, Ethan Schmohe (Sullivan, Ill./Sullivan) finished first in the B-Finals of the 200 backstroke. Schmohe times in at 1:55.73, finishing 9th overall in the event. Schmohe's time reached the Top 10 in Warhawk history, timing in 9th all time.

For the women's 200 backstroke, Hannah Wenszell (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Virtual) and Izzy Doczy (Greendale, Wis./Greendale) both timed in for the B  Final. Wenszell placed 11th overall with Doczy placing 14th. 

In the men's 100 Freestyle, Dom Schlueter (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) broke another record. In the prelims earlier today, Schlueter touched in 45.62 seconds, the second best time in Warhawk history. In the Finals on Saturday night, Schlueter beat his time in the prelims, touching in 45.32 seconds, breaking his own and the UW-Whitewater record set last year. 

Ethan Bergman (Racine, Wis./Bradford) also competed alongside Schlueter in the 100 freestyle. Bergman's prelim time of 45.82 ranks third fastest in the record books, as Bergman finished four overall in the event. 

Emily Connel and Ava Hennig (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) competed for the women in the B-Final of the 100 freestyle. Connell finished the event 12th overall, with Hennig tallying 15th.

Noah Johnson (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) also reached the Top 10 in the record books, swimming a 2:09.22 in the preliminary heat of the 200 breaststroke. Johnson qualified for the B-Finals of the same event, and placed second overall in a tight race. Johnson and the B-Finals first place finisher were only 0.03 seconds apart. 

The Warhawk women had three swimmers in the 200 breaststroke, with Grace Jasken (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee), Logan Cunningham (Sun Prairie, Wis./East), and Natalie Miska (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village) all competing in the B-Finals. Jasked led the pack, finishing 12th overall, with Cunningham (15th) and Miska (16th) not far behind.

For the Women's 200 butterfly, Paige Malitz (Wausau, Wis./DC Everest), Lauryn Moneta (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland), and Hannah Gault (Moline, Ill./Senior) all improved from their times in the preliminaries, each cutting off almost two seconds from their times earlier in the day. 

In the final events of the WIAC Championships, the Men's 400 Yard freestyle came down to the wire. The Men's team consisting of Etha Bergman, Donny Gramer (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore), Dom Schlueter (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin), and Owen Phillips (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa Township), were neck and neck with the relay team from UW-Eau Claire. As both last legs of the relay teams approached the wall, they were neck and neck. And with a crazy finish, the UW-Whitewater and UW-Eau Claire team touched at the exact same time, both clocking in with a 3:04.28 time.

DAY THREE RECAP

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's and women's swim team continued on with the WIAC Championship into Friday night. On the third day of the championships, Dom Schlueter (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) picked up a gold medal finish in the 200 Freestyle.

In addition to the Swimming & Diving events, the 2024 WIAC All-Sportsmanship team was named. Representing UW-Whitewater is Isaac Schroeder (Waukesha, Wis./) for the men and Amanda Harper (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) for the women. 

The finals of Friday night started with the 100 yard butterfly, Ethan Bergman (Racine, Wis./Bradford) represented the Warhawks in the A Finals of the event, after touching in 51.20 seconds in the preliminaries, a third best time in UWW history. Bergman finished 8th in the heat, with a time of 51.52 Matt Ozog (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin) and Matt Sipin (Round Lake, Ill./Grayslake Central) both competed in the B Finals of the 100 yard fly, placing 14th and 16th respectively.

The Women's side of the 100 yard butterfly featured two Warhawk swimmers in the B FInal. Paige Malitz (Wausau, Wis./DC Everest) and Lauryn Moneta (Sugar Grove, Ill./Kaneland) swam neck and neck, finishing a second apart from each other, placing 11th and 12th overall in the event. 

In the Men's 400 IM, Daniel Keller (Omaha, Neb./Papillion-LaVista) qualified for the A Finals by clocking a 4:15.27 in the qualifier. Keller improved on his time in the Finals, shaving down his time by nearly 2 seconds, to finish 6th with a 4:13.99. 

Hannah Wenszell (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Virtual) finished in the top Five of the women's 400 IM. The freshman touched with a time of 4:43.40, the 6th best time in Warhawk history to place fifth in the event. On the B-Finals of the same event, Hannah Gault (Moline, Ill./Senior) cut nearly seven seconds off her time from the preliminaries, moving up to 12th overall in the 400 IM. 

After the Women's 400 IM, came the Men's 200 Freestyle. Dom Schlueter (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) got out to a hot start on the first leg, touching third after the first stretch. He kicked it up a notch and quickly worked his way into first place, where he finished with a 1:40.41, two seconds faster than second place. Schlueter's time was also a Warhawk record, breaking his time from Wednesday night by 0.02 seconds.

In the B-Finals of the Men's 200, Caleb Weis (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) finished first in the event, placing 9th overall with a time of 1:44.01. 

The Warhawks had two swimmers in the B-Final of the 200 freestyle, with Ava Hennig (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) and Emily Connell (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) placing 14th and 16th place overall. 

The next event of note for the Warhawks was the Men's 100 yard breaststroke. In the A-FInal, Donny Gramer (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) placed 8th overall. In the B-Final, Noah Johnosn, Owen Phillips (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa Township), and Brenden Spaulding (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) placed 10th, 11th, and 15th overall in an impressive team effort. 

For the women, it was a team effort in the 100 yard breaststroke, as Grace Jasken (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) and Logan Cunningham (Sun Prairie, Wis./East) finished less than a second a part to take 12th and 13th respectively in the event.

Ethan Schmore earned another Top 5, with a 51.77 second finish for the 100 yard backstroke. Schmoe finished fifth overall in the A-Final. On the women's side, Izzy Doczy (Greendale, Wis./Greendale) competed in the B-Final of the event, touching second in the heat for a 10th place finish in the event. 

In the final swimming events of the night, the men's 200 freestyle team nearly broke another record. The team consisting of, Ethan Bergman (Racine, Wis./Bradford), Owen Phillips (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa Township), Donny Gramer (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore), and Dom Schlueter (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) touched with a time of 1:23.14 to finish 4th overall. That time was only 0.01 seconds away from breaking the Warhawks record. 

In the diving events, Drew Schmitz (Appleton, Wis./North) finished 6th overall, scoring 377.95 points in the 1 meter dive. Schmitz, a freshman improved on his score from the prelims, and wrote his name as #6 in the record books.

DAY TWO RECAP

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater continued to post top times in the 2024 WIAC Swim & Dive Conference Championship in Brown Deer.   

To start off the finals meet on Thursday night, Caleb Weis (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) competed in the A Finals for the Men's 500 freestyle. Weis improved on his time from the preliminaries on Thursday morning, finishing with a 4:44.81 in the event.   

In the B Finals of the Men's 500 freestyle, Hunter Hayberger (Sandusky, Ohio/Sandusky) and Matt Sipin (Round Lake, Ill./Grayslake Central) finished neck in neck, placing 2nd and 3rd in the heat, scoring 10th and 11th overall in the event.   

Dom Schlueter (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) was up next in the Men's 200 yard IM. Schlueter qualified for the A Finals after a 1:55.32 time in the event, the 6th fastest time in Warhawk history. In the finals event, Schlueter boosted himself even higher in the record book, touching in 1:53.47, the 2nd fastest time in Warhawk history for the 200 IM. That time was good for fourth overall in the stacked field. 

In the B Finals of the Men's 200 IM, Noah Johnson (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb), Daniel Keller (Omaha, Neb./Papillion-LaVista), and Zak Nowakowski (DeForest, Wis./DeForest) all placed. Johnson, a freshman, touched first in the B final, placing 9th overall in the event with a time of 1:57.18.  

Hannah Gault (Moline, Ill./Senior) competed in the B final of the Women's 200 IM. Gault shaved nearly 2 seconds off her time from the prelims. The two second improvement placed her 6th in the heat, scoring 14th overall in the event.  

In one of the closest heats of the night, Ethan Bergman (Racine, Wis./Bradford) placed 5th overall in the A Final of the 50 yard freestyle. Bergman touched in 21.13 seconds in the preliminaries, a time that ranked 3rd all time in Warhawk history. In the finals, Bergman touched in nearly an identical time at 21.15. 3rd thru 5th in the heat were all decided by less than 0.03 seconds.     Ethan Schmoe competed in the B Finals of the 50 yard freestyle, coming in 6th in the heat for 14th place overall.   

On the women's side of the 50 yard freestyle, Emily Connell (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) qualified for the B Final with a time of 24.68 in the prelims of Thursday morning, ranking her 5th in the Warhawk record books. In the Final, Connell took 5th overall, with less than 0.4 seconds separating her from the lead swimmer.   

The Warhawk women had two divers in the Finals for the 1 meter dive, with Lydia Wirkkula (West Bend, Wis./West Bend West) taking 13th overall in the event, and Maggie Reinert (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton-Warreville South) placing 16th.  

The Thursday night events wrapped up with the Men's and Women's 400 yard medley relay. The men's team composed of Schmohe, Donny Gramer (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore), Matt Ozog (Bartlett, Ill./South Elgin), and Owen Phillips (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa Township), placed fourth in the conference, while the women's team placed fifth. Swimming in the women's 400 medley for the Warhawks was Izzy Doczy (Greendale, Wis./Greendale), Hannah Wenszell (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Virtual), Paige Malitz (Wausau, Wis./DC Everest), and Connell.

DAY ONE RECAP

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater swimming and diving program set two records on the first day of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship in Brown Deer. 

The Warhawk men captured both records - the first on the opening event of the championship meet. UWW's combination of Ethan Schmohe (Sullivan, Ill./Sullivan), Donny Gramer (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore), Ethan Bergman (Racine, Wis./Bradford) and Dom Schlueter (South Elgin, Ill./South Elgin) broke the program record in the 200-yard medley relay coming into the wall in 1:31.53. The tight race saw the top four teams touching the wall within 1.2 seconds of each other with the Warhawk squad taking fourth. 

Schlueter broke his own record in the 200 freestyle. This time he set the mark as the lead leg on the 800 freestyle relay. Schlueter opened the race with a time of 1:40.43. He was joined by Bergman, Caleb Weis (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) and Hunter Hayberger (Sandusky, Ohio/Sandusky) to record a time of 6:53.84 - good for bronze at the meet. 

The men's three meter diving competition was the lone individual event of day one. Drew Schmitz (Appleton, Wis./North) totaled 339.60 to finish ninth while Edwin Villagomez (Burbank, Ill./Reavis) was 13th with a total of 261.60. 

The Warhawk women's 200-yard medley relay team of Izzy Doczy (Greendale, Wis./Greendale), Hannah Wenszell (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Virtual), Paige Malitz (Wausau, Wis./DC Everest) and Andi Bullman recorded a time of 1:53.81 to finish fifth. UWW's 800 freestyle relay combination of Emily Connell (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower), Wenszell, Gala Boutin (San Antonio, Tex./Smithson Valley) and Ava Hennig (Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) were fifth with a time of 8:19.19.
