When to Call 9-1-1
When you dial 9-1-1 your call will be answered by one of REMSA’s medically trained and certified Communications Specialists, who will immediately get your location and dispatch the appropriate and closest pre-hospital medical provider. While the ambulance is on its way, the Communications Specialist will continue to gather information from the caller, continuously updating the responding personnel.
Often, the Communications Specialist remains on the line until help arrives. During the call, Communications Specialists follow international medical protocols enabling them to provide lifesaving instructions to the callers. This includes instructions for chest compressions, rescue breaths, severe bleeding control, as well as guidance during child birth, scene safety information and over-the-phone instructions to perform the Heimlich maneuver for victims of choking.
Depending on the severity of the situation, or if the caller just has general medical questions, the Communications Specialist may transfer callers to REMSA’s Nurse Healthline where the caller can ask a Registered Nurse questions regarding what type of treatment is best recommended for their situation.
