William Giannobile (DDS ’91) will become the new dean of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, starting Sept. 1. An outstanding educator and leader in the field of periodontology, Dr. Giannobile is an endowed professor and chair of the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine at the University of Michigan School of Dentistry and also a professor of biomedical engineering at the university’s College of Engineering and the Biointerfaces Institute.

Dr. Giannobile is an internationally recognized scholar in oral and periodontal regenerative medicine, tissue engineering and precision medicine, areas for which he has received continuous NIH research funding. At the University of Michigan, he leads a laboratory that explores methods of growth-factor delivery, such as gene therapy, for restoring periodontal tissue loss. He serves as co-principal investigator of the NIH-funded Michigan-Pittsburgh-Wyss Regenerative Medicine Resource Center, which translates early stage dental, oral and craniofacial reconstructive technologies into clinical practice. He is the editor or co-editor of nine books, and his textbook Clinical Research in Oral Health was the first of its kind and remains the foremost resource in the field. He has received many awards in recognition of his stellar teaching and research.

Laila Hishaw (DDS ’00) has just released her book, Cavity Free Kids: How to Care for Your Kids’ Teeth From Birth Through Their Teenage Years, which has ranked #1 on the Amazon Bestseller’s List in several categories. Proceeds from the book go toward Diversity in Dentistry Mentorships, a platform she founded to educate and empower underrepresented youth to explore dentistry as a profession through mentoring.

Dr. Hishaw is in private practice in Tucson, Arizona, and enjoys speaking nationally on issues pertaining to women in dentistry, pediatric dentistry, diversity in dentistry and burnout.  Look for her to speak at MDC in 2021!

Isolation Creation ChallengeWe proposed our own “Nailed It” challenge and we were blown away by the entries!

As we binge Netflix, like the rest of the world during self-isolation, we wanted to recreate one of our favorite shows “Nailed It!”, but with a dental twist – of course. We offered up the challenge to recreate these teeth cupcakes.
