Reminder: NIBA Meeting  -- 2nd Tuesday of the month!

NIBA 2018 Holiday Food Drive

We will be kicking off our Holiday Food Drive this week.  As in the past, we will be collecting food (and monetary donations) for Lift Urban Portland. Call Beth Madden 206-484-2886 to schedule the delivery of your collection barrel.

Last year we collected 1,984 pounds of food, and we hope to increase this by 15% to 2,300 pounds this year.  We will need everyone's help to accomplish our goal.

Who is Lift Urban Portland?
Lift Urban Portland is a local nonprofit (offices in Montgomery Park) that provides food for neighbors in low-income apartment buildings through a grocery style food pantry and Delivered Food Boxes to folks who are unable to leave their homes.  You can find out more about them at www.lifturbanportland.org.

How can you sign up your company to participate?
If you participated in the past, you know the drill, and we will be reaching out to you to find a time to drop off a barrel to you.  If you have not participated in the past, please connect with me by phone or email and we can talk more about the drive, and I will put you on the list to get a barrel.

Barrels will be dropped off this Tuesday and Wednesday and will be picked up December 17th and 18th

What donations are most useful to Lift Urban Portland?
In the past, we have provided a list of useful items and provided little other direction.  Lift Urban Portland has found that "directed" food drives are more successful, both in terms of participation, and donations received.  In light of this, we are looking for three types of donations this year.

· Unexpired food that you may have in your home and are willing to donate to the cause.
· Specific food items that are staples for the food boxes, and not always readily available from other Lift Urban Portland sources.  These can be purchased when you do your regular grocery shopping and added to the bin.  However, this year, instead of a list of items, we will assign each company a specific type of food to focus on (i.e., beans) and that will be posted on your barrels when dropped off.
· "Cash" donations.  While we appreciate the food donations, there are some specific dietary needs of clients that need to be met, as well as bulk items that can be purchased at a discount by Lift Urban Portland. If your employees would like to make a cash contribution, they can do so at www.lifturbanportland.org and note that it is for the NIBA Food drive in the comments section.

What else is new this year?
Lift Urban Portland has a "Pack & Pints" program where community volunteers go to the warehouse on NW 29th Avenue to pack boxes for homebound residents and then meet at a local establishment afterwards for a celebratory beverage.  NIBA is partnering with Lift Urban Portland and Sasquatch Brewing to do this, and will also be combining this with our Holiday party.  So, if you would like to join the NIBA Board to pack boxes and then meet at Sasquatch Brewing for our post party and Holiday event, that would be great. Space is limited to 12 people, so please let me know if you can join us.
The Pack & Pints/Holiday Party  will be a great opportunity to recognize contributions to the food drive, and also reflect on the NIBA's successes in 2018! Even if you can not help pack boxes, we hope you will join us for the Holiday Party.
 Tentative Date: December 19th
Box Packing at Lift Urban Portland warehouse at 2860 NW 29th Avenue in the U-Store building, followed by get together at Sasquatch. .
