Osprey Outlook: Men's Soccer Preview

8/30/2023 10:00:00 AM

The Stockton men's soccer team will look very different this year. Head coach Greg Ruttler enters his ninth season with a young roster that includes 14 freshmen and 10 sophomores. With just 11 returnees joined by 17 newcomers on the squad, Stockton will have to jell quickly.

The Ospreys have a trio of players who started at least 17 of the team's 19 games plus four more who played in at least 18 matches last year. Plenty of playing time will be available for the youngsters, who are joined by just two juniors and two seniors. Stockton was ranked sixth in the NJAC preseason coaches poll.
  • Sophomore Aiden Hoenisch started all 19 games and received NJAC Rookie of the Year, NJAC Second Team and United Soccer Coaches All-Region IV Third Team last season. Hoenisch was the only freshman among the 41 players who received all-conference kudos.
  • Hoenisch led the Ospreys in scoring with 15 points on a team-high five goals plus five assists, which was second on the squad. He was tied for fifth in the NJAC in assists, tied for seventh in points and tied for eighth in goals.
  • Junior Joseph P. Carbone is second on the team with 39 career games played. Carbone, who has 13 career goals, finished second on the team in goals (4) and tied for second in points (10) last year. He earned one NJAC Offensive Player of the Week award as well.
  • Sophomore Thomas Trimble is a returnee at forward who played in all 19 games and scored three goals as a rookie. Trimble was named NJAC Offensive Player of the Week once last season.
  • Thei trio of returning forwards will be supplemented by freshmen Carter Bailey, Joseph A. Carbone, Niko Guzzi, Chris Krall and Ernst Louisius.
  • Senior Antonio Matos leads the midfield unit, which should be the strength of the team. Matos has played in a team-high 42 career games. Last year he tied for second on the team with 10 points on two goals and a team-leading six helpers, which tied for second in the NJAC.
  • Sophomores Uche Wokocha, Jake Homowitz, and Landen Sutterby are returning letterwinners at midfield. Wokocha and Homowitz played in all 19 games as rookies, with Wokocha scoring twice and Homowitz dealing one assist.
  • Playing their rookie seasons at midfield will be freshmen Nicholas Calambas, JP Candela, Matthew Dorsey, Aidan Pereira, and Ziad Souki.
  • Defensively, the Ospreys will be led by sophomore Dawson Joseph, who started all 17 games in which he appeared during his rookie campaign. Joseph helped the Ospreys post seven shutouts and a 1.15 goals against average that was third in the NJAC last season.
  • Joseph will be joined by fellow sophs Tommy Osterman and Solo Doumbouya as returnees on defense. Osterman appeared in 10 games off the bench last year. Junior Kieran Sundermann is a newcomer who brings experience from 10 games played at Wesley College.
  • Freshmen Johnathan Holden, Noah Jones, and Tyler Lowe add to the list of backs who will push for playing time on defense.
  • In net, there will be a competition for minutes between returning senior Branden Langley, sophomores Matthew Faria and Kyle Birmingham and freshman Brady Bartletta. Langley has played 33 career minutes for Stockton. Faria is a transfer who was on the roster at FDU-Florham as the backup goalie last year.
