May 15th Successful Aging Festival Update: 
If you have not looked recently, please visit our Successful Aging Festival Ballonpage.  Sessions, sponsors, exhibitors, marketplace vendors, and advertisers are frequently added.  We hope to have the tentative event schedule posted very soon.  For guests who wish to receive a free lunch, CLICK HERE to register.   We are also pleased to report that our Hesburgh Keynote Lecturer, Dr. Paul Bohn, was recently appointed as director of the University of Notre Dame’s new Bioengineering and Life Sciences Initiative.  Dr. Bohn’s lecture and discussion is currently scheduled for 2:15-3:30pm in the Campus Center Theatre.

Staff and Leadership Updates
 
Congratulations and best wishes to SCOSA associate Sreelekha Prakash, MD, MPH, who was recently elected as president of the New Jersey Public Health Association (NJPHA). Founded in 1875, NJPHA is one of the oldest public health organizations in the U.S. NJPHA’ mission is to strengthen, advocate, and advance public health in New Jersey. Dr. Prakash and Dr. Betsy Erbaugh, associate professor of Sociology, are also trustees of the newly formed Center for Health Equity: Public Health Institute of NJ.
 





SCOSA’s Advisory Council met on February 29th to discuss SCOSA leadership succession planning, programming, grant-writing, and planning for the Successful Aging Festival. We’re grateful to those who participated, including those pictured below.
 
 

On Sunday, March 10, 2024, SCOSA staff members Patricia Collins and Pearl (Peppy) Margolis represented  SCOSA  at the annual “Lines on the Pines” event in the Stockton University Campus Center to promote the upcoming Successful Aging Festival
to patrons and exhibitors.
   











In other outreach activities, Dave Burdick and Fionna Janson gave a brief presentation about SCOSA’s many programs at the Canoe Club in Hammonton on March 12th. Fionna (pictured at right) tabled at the Community Resource Fair in the Campus Center Event Room on March 14th, co-sponsored by the Stockton Office of Military and Veterans Services.  SCOSA will assist the Gerontology Minor in tabling during Stockton’s Minors Fair in the E/F Galleries on March 27th  and 28th.   

SCOSA will be actively involved during Stockton’s first annual STARS event (Scholarship, Teaching & Research Symposium), including Dave Burdick’s “Last Lecture” at 1:00pm on Wednesday 4/24/24 in the Campus Center Event Room, Helen Wei’s session titled, “Artificial Intelligence in Mental Health for the Aging Population" (co-authors student Riya Goyal and Dave Burdick) on Thursday 4/25/24 at 1:00pm in Campus Center MR3 during the Celebration of Scholarship and Teaching, and the SCOSA-Sponsored Psychology Program Distinguished Alumni Award Lecture by Dr. David Williams from Brown University at 2:00pm in the Campus Center Board of Trustees Room on Friday 4/26/24 from 2:00-3:15pm.  
 

In Age-Friendly University News:  Karen Rose, SCOSA Age-Friendly Champion and Helen Wei, SCOSA faculty associate and, associate  professor of Computer Science and Information Systems recently attended a global online seminar sponsored by the University of Dublin entitled "Harnessing Virtual Reality to Understand Dementia and the Aging Experience.” Participants were brought on an empathy journey using virtual reality tools to better understand difficulties in detecting sound, reductions in the visual field, and distortions in perception that are associated with disorders such as dementia, conductive hearing loss, macular degeneration, and glaucoma.  
 
And, on March 27, 2024, Christine Ferri, Gina Maguire, and Karen Rose will attend a NJ Division of Aging Services State Plan on Aging stakeholder meeting to discuss ways to reach goals outlined in the 2021 to 2025 NJ State Plan on Aging. Many topics are on the agenda including caregiving and age-inclusivity.

Atlantic County Three-Year Area Plan Survey:    Atlantic County 60+ Residents are encouraged to participate in the online Area Plan Needs Assessment Survey or by answering the phone if called by Stockton’s Hughes Center for Public Policy. The survey is coming soon and will be posted on SCOSA's Older Adult Education page, distributed by Atlantic County Provider Agencies, and promoted through press releases.  One or more public listening sessions will also be held at SCOSA's May 15th Festival.  Please email David.Burdick@stockton.edu if you have questions. 

SCOSA News Especially for Faculty & Students

NEWS FOR FACULTY: Please see e-mail from “Internal Awards” with the subject “Call for SCOSA Faculty Research Scholar Awards for FY25”.  The application deadline is April 10, 2024, at 5pm.  A total of $20,000 ($10,000 from the Provost office and $10,000 from SCOSA) is available to support scholarly or creative/artistic projects consistent with SCOSA’s mission to “nurture body, mind & spirit of older adults through research, education, & service”.  

Careers in Aging Month Webinar: Teaching Tips and Tricks
Wednesday, March 27th, 12 pm – 1 pm ET.  Presented on Zoom.

This panel, organized by the Advancement Committee of the Academy for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE) of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) aims to highlight academic teaching careers as a part of the 2024 Careers in Aging Month activities.

Hear gerontological instructors from various career stages share their tips, tricks, and resources related to online and in-person instruction in gerontology courses. Panelists include Dr. Aaron Guest from Arizona State University, Dr. Carrie Andreoletti from Central Connecticut State University, Dr. Harvey Sterns from the University of Akron, and moderator Dr. David Burdick from Stockton University.

As preregistration and precepting days are drawing near, we encourage students to visit the Gerontology Minor and SCOSA tables at this week's Rush Your Minor Event.  Tabling will take place in the E-J Wing Galleries on Wednesday, March 27th  (11:00am - 6:00pm) and Thursday March 28th (11:00am - 5:30pm).

GERO 4905: Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Practicum. In this 2-credit courses that runs from May 15 through June 26, students will work under the supervision of skilled professionals in 4-person interprofessional teams to conduct Resident Health Risk Assessments of older adults in the Village at St. Peter's (Pleasantville) and will then develop and run various wellness programs.  Approximately 24 hours will be spent at St. Peter's and another 10-15 hours will be spent in preparation for the program (e.g., learning about the 4Ms of Age Friendly Health Care Systems, learning various screening/assessment techniques, learning how to effectively work with other professions, etc.) and preparing and presenting a concluding case study and overall report on the experience. 

Stockton's participation in the New Jersey Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP) is funded in a sub-award from the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine from HRSA (the Health Resources & Services Administration).  Students who successfully complete the program requirements will be eligible to receive a $500.00 stipend to partly defray their expenses. Come explore the variety of water features we have on Stockton's Galloway campus. This class will visit a different place every week, including Lake Fred, the Cedar Swamp, the big vernal pond, and Lake Pam. Ability to walk moderate distances on uneven ground required. Emma Witt, Ph.D. is an associate professor of Environmental Sciences whose research focuses on Pinelands water quantity and quality.

This course will explore the chemical principles behind the creation and analysis of art. Students will work in a laboratory to produce several artwork pieces and investigate four main topics: properties of light, paints and pigments, dyes and fibers, and modern materials. Sarah Gray, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of chemistry at Stockton. When not researching chemical oceanography, her hobbies include painting and fiber arts.

The Conversation Project helps people share their wishes about care through the end of life. This course will review the starter kit and their guide to choosing and to being a health care proxy. Discussions will focus on how to best share what matters most to you with your loved ones. Christine Ferri, Ph.D., is assistant director of SCOSA and an associate professor of psychology at Stockton. She is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in aging and mental health.

Critical thinking is a practical reasoning process derived from logic and psychology and used to decide what to believe and do in real life. Course audience will actively participate in exercises focused on ways to think clearly, techniques to handle logical obstacles, biases, and fallacies and exposure to deductive and inductive reasoning. Jacques Press is a long-time adjunct instructor at Stockton. He designed college coursework on critical thinking. Outside campus, he is involved in aviation operations analysis. Fluent in French, he leads an adult group that meets weekly online for language conversation.

Spirituality has a profound and compelling role in healing the mind and body. Those experiencing life’s challenges develop attributes that increase acceptance, reduce negative emotions, form meaningful relationships, and find life’s purpose. This session will explore ways to assess challenges of self in hopes of reconstructing a better understanding of health and healing as they intersect with spirituality. Some techniques will be introduced to benefit or enhance health e.g. meditation, reflective journaling. Guia Calicdan-Apostle is an associate professor of Social Work. She teaches primarily in the Master of Social Work program at Stockton University. She completed her doctorate in Social Work (Clinical Social Work) at the School of Social Policy and Practice, University of Pennsylvania and is currently a coordinator of the Victimology and Victim Services minor.

This course discusses life issues, relationships, happiness, values and ethics, and other topics related to well-being and personal growth. Material is based upon research by Buscaglia, Pliskin, Twerski, and other psychologists and spiritual leaders. People find meaning and happiness in life through their connection with nature, places, service, relationships, community, and leisure. Exceptional longevity has been studied by many, including Dan Buettner who in 2004 coined the term “Blue Zones.” In this synchronous online zoom series, students will learn more about some “power 9 commonalities” (moving naturally with purpose and belonging) by exploring aging and spirituality aspects and qualities (diet, exercise, sense of community) that comprise a Blue Zone. Lisa E. Cox, Ph.D., LCSW, MSW is professor of social work and gerontology in Stockton University’s School of Social & Behavioral Science, Social Work Program. 
 
SCOSA's Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Group
  
 

SCOSA's weekly Alzheimer’s Caregiver Education and Support Group always welcomes new participants to our meeting on Tuesdays from 12:00 noon to 1:00pm. The program is funded federally through the Atlantic County Office on Aging. Caregivers are invited to attend either in-person (Galloway Campus Center) or online via Zoom. Our support group sessions are led by SCOSA service chair, Dr. Christine Gayda or our assistant director, Dr. Christine Ferri.

Imagine nine of the world’s most talented four-legged performers in an uproariously funny, comedy dog spectacular and you get Mutts Gone Nuts! The all-star lineup includes Feather, the Guinness world record holder for highest jumping canine, National Champion Frisbee dogs, a hilarious six-pound Pomeranian Pikachu mix, and a host of previously discarded dogs that will dance, prance, and skip their way right into your heart. The family friendly show runs about 75 minutes and was created by veteran comedy team Scott and Joan Houghton, who performed their duo act ‘Jessie & James’ on variety stages from Tokyo to Las Vegas. In 2014, The Houghtons joined forces with some of the countries’ top dog trainers, world class comedian Jonathan Burns and eight adorable pound puppies to create an action packed, comedy dog spectacular. "Puebla: The Story of Cinco de Mayo" was conceived by Artistic Director and Co-Founder Alberto Lopez Herrera who sought to honor the culture of his birthplace in Puebla, Mexico. At the same time, he wanted to take advantage of the American celebration of Cinco de Mayo, and the many misconceptions about what it represents and why. Lastly, its retelling of the history is through our own eyes as Mexicans, Poblanxs, and immigrants. SCOSA offers free tickets to residents of Atlantic County who are aged 60+. Mask encouraged for in-person events. The Lynn Kramer Village by the Shore is a membership program for adults over 50. The program provides Intergenerational Events, Transportation, Grocery Shopping and Delivery, Kosher Meals on Wheels, and more. Spring is in the air! Join us live from Tina Serota’s front porch for a demonstration on planning, creating, and maintaining your own manageable bulbs and flowers container garden. Art Comes Alive: Compare & Contrast, Wednesday, April 3 (1 to 2pm) 
 
Join us as local award-winning artist Shirley Belitsky shares her journey through comparing and contrasting the same subject matter when it is viewed by different artists through the use of light, color, technique, and brushstrokes. Learn how an artist uses elements of design to share life experiences while invoking an era, time, place, and history. Light refreshments will be served. Start the day in an upbeat way! Explore positivity with JFS Wellness Coordinator Mary Jean Arreola and Village Community Specialist Tina Serota. You’ll learn ways to boost wellness – mind, body, and soul. Topics include self-care, mindfulness, gratitude, meditation, and resiliency. This program is via Zoom and a link will be emailed. Women’s Coffee & Conversation – Reframing Aging Together, Monday, April 8 (10:30 to 11:30am) 
 
Join Village Community Specialist Tina Serota, Bratton Law Group’s Jen Hand, Katz JCC’s Bridget Giblin, Angelic Health’s Carolyn Johnson Peterson, Alzheimer’s Association’s Mary Beth Lewis, and UMC’s Michele Musto as they host monthly professional speakers on issues that impact a woman’s ability to live her best life. In April, the topic will focus on Reframing Aging Through a Positive Lens. Stockton University’s SCOSA Senior Operations Specialist and Adjunct Faculty Member in Gerontology Gina Maguire will discuss how to create a meaningful life while finding purpose and passion, building strong relationships, and giving back to the community.  Memory Connections, Monday, April 8 (1 to 2:30pm) 
 
Join Village Community Specialist Tina Serota, Alzheimer’s Association’s Mary Beth Lewis, Angelic Health’s Carolyn Johnson Peterson, Bratton Law Group’s Jen Hand, UMC’s Michele Musto, and Katz JCC’s Bridget Giblin for a gathering of Caregivers of loved ones with Dementia and the person living with the disease. Caregivers will participate in a support group led by a trained professional while their loved one will enjoy a socialization activity. Light refreshments will be served. Village Film Society, Tuesday, April 9 (10:30 to 11:30am) 
 
Join Village Film Enthusiast & Historic Cinematic Buff Tom Celandine and Village Community Specialist Tina Serota for a discussion about the Oscar award-winning movie, Oppenheimer. The star-studded film follows the appointment of Physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer by Lieutenant General Leslie Groves, Jr. to work on a top-secret Manhattan Project during WWII. Oppenheimer and a team of scientists spend years developing and designing the atomic bomb and when their work comes to fruition, they witness the world’s first nuclear explosion, forever changing their lives and the course of history. The movie can be viewed on Peacock, Prime Video, and Apple TV or is available on DVD at the Ventnor and Margate libraries. This program is via Zoom and a link will be emailed. RSVP by April 4. 
  
Mahjong & Canasta Brunch, Wednesday, April 10 (beginning at 11am) 
 
Join friends and neighbors for a delightful afternoon of strategic game play, vibrant conversations and a delectable brunch. This program takes place at the Katz JCC Auditorium, 501 North Jerome Avenue in Margate and provides a perfect day of socializing, competition and fun. Experience the thrill of capturing life’s adventures, history, and ancestry with the Memoir Workshop led by award-winning author and Drexel University Director of Certificate Program in Writing and Publishing, Harriet Levin Millan. 14th Annual Paul Lyons Lecture Series Rescheduled to April 10 at Stockton University’s Campus Center Theater  
  
The new date is Wednesday, April 10, at 4:30 p.m. in the Campus Center Theater. A reception will follow in the Campus Center Theater Gallery. Our new speaker is Dr. Greta LaFleur, Associate Professor and Graduate Director of American Studies at Yale University. Dr. LaFleur’s research focus is early American gender and sexuality, and their talk, “Notes from the Colonial Castration Archive,” explores the pre-history of trans people, gendered non-conformity and sexual dissidence. LaFleur’s books include The Natural History of Sexuality in Early America (John Hopkins, 2018), Trans Historical: Gender Plurality Before the Modern (ed., Cornell, 2021) and A Queer History of Sexual Violence (in progress). The Master of Arts in American Studies (MAAS) program graciously thanks its partner programs, AFRI, HIST, LITT, PHIL, POLS, SOAN, and our additional support from Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) program, Social Work (SOWK) and the Master of Arts in Holocaust and Genocide Studies (MAHG).
