SPOTLIGHT on October SILL Classes
In October, we are offering two classes with some of Stockton’s best professors.  Widen your perspective by learning about the American Revolution from the Black perspective.  And/or explore some solutions to critical environmental issues.  Each class is just $45 for a four-week course. Choose to attend in-person (Masks Required) or via Zoom as the spirit moves you.

Kameika Murphy, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Atlantic History
October 15, October 22, October 29 & November 5 (Fridays)
2:30–3:30pm, F-226 (Galloway Campus) or via Zoom for those who prefer.
Click here or call (609) 626-3591 to register.

This course offers a Black Atlantic take on the American Revolution. The approach allows us to view the American wars for independence from the perspective of Africans and people of African descent. In so doing, we seek to cast a very familiar topic (the Revolution) into new light. The course traces various developments that resulted from the wars as they were understood and experienced by Afro descendants who participated as central actors shaping its outcome.
Kameika Murphy is an Atlantic World historian with expertise on the Black Atlantic. She is an assistant professor whose research pays special attention to military communities as a lens through which politics, agency, mobility, and culture in slave societies can be understood in much broader contexts, beyond conflict and war.

Professors Tait Chirenje and Patrick Hossay
October 15, October 22, October 29 & November 5 (Fridays)
3:45–4:45pm, F-226 (Galloway Campus) or via Zoom for those who prefer
Click here or call (609)626-3591 to register.

The fate of our survival, and that of the planet, is closely related to how we deal with the most pressing environmental challenges facing us. This course covers some of the major environmental issues we face: urbanization, water quality, air quality (including climate change), and loss of biological diversity. We will also examine some of the most promising solutions, including alternative energy, smart community design, and electric vehicles.

Tait Chirenje is a Professor of Environmental Science and Sustainability. His research focuses on trace metal chemistry, surface water chemistry, indoor air quality assessment, Brownfields characterization, Phase I and II site assessments, and urban geochemistry. Recently, he started Zimbabwe Book Project.

Patrick Hossay heads the Energy Studies and Sustainability programs at Stockton University where he teaches courses in automotive technology, green vehicle innovations, and energy science. He is also an experienced aircraft and automotive mechanic and enjoys restoring classic cars and motorcycles.

MONTHLY COLUMN by Michaelle Cooke, SCOSA TES

SCOSA’s Pickleball for Older Adults has been moved outdoors!  It will be held in the tennis courts located off Pomona Road behind the baseball, soccer and field hockey fields.  Please go here to sign up and for more information.

Everyone is talking about a recent study that showed how many daily steps are required to stave off early death from all causes:  7,000 steps per day.  Successful aging begins before you’re old. Participants between the ages of 38 and 50 were selected and then followed for just over 10 years.  Interestingly, it’s quantity, not quality that counts.  That is, step intensity isn’t associated with mortality in this study.  See the complete study here.

In September I competed in swimming events at the NJ Senior Olympics held at the Woodbridge Community Center in Woodbridge, NJ.  Registration was easy:  the $30 entry fee allowed registration in three events.  I chose 50 yard, 100 yard and 500 yard freestyle swimming events.  At the event my fellow competitors were friendly and helpful.  Many people seemed to know each other, but even a stranger like myself felt included.  Folks shared hints, strategies and information about the national games to be held in Ft. Lauderdale in May 2022.  I highly recommend trying out the games next year.  The competition is not so overwhelming that you won’t win a medal or two!

SCOSA NEWS & PROGRAMS ESPECIALLY FOR PROFESSIONALS, STUDENTS, & FACULTY

SCOSA seeks inclusivity in our programming but some of our programming is particularly relevant for the professional development of current providers of services to older adults and to students on their path to professions (and their professors).  This month, we particularly draw your attention to the several American Society on Aging Webinars that we have listed in section two above.  We invite faculty to assign these to students (for credit or extra credit), and students to request credit from their faculty.

GERO COORDINATOR’S COLUMN
by Christine Gayda-Chelder, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology, and SCOSA service chair

105 years-old and STILL RUNNING!

Dispelling ageism is a challenging task. It is still too often assumed that older adults are inactive, slow, cranky, forgetful…the list goes on. In my courses on Aging, I share the story of one dynamic “role model” of successful aging. Her name is Julia “Hurricane” Hawkins. Mrs. Hawkins held the world record for the 100-meter dash for her age group until August. The winner this time was 100-year-old Diane “Flash” Friedman (featured in The Advocate, Baton Rouge). These women are both inspirational and demonstrate that age is indeed just a number. A video clip of Hurricane Hawkins may be found on You Tube at the link below. And if this inspires you or others to minor in Gerontology, please do email me at Christine.Gayda@stockton.edu. Remember to keep on moving to keep your heart AND brain healthy!

Summer GERO Interns

Placing interns into long-term care settings has been arduous as the communities often needed to restrict access to ‘non-essential’ visitors, including interns. This summer, it was necessary to ‘throw the normal schedule out the window’ and we placed two students during the beginning of the summer (Allison Bremer at Strive Physical Therapy and Stevie Kiziukiewicz at the Medicare Rights Center) and two at the end of the summer (Ericka Sylveus at Reflections at Brandywine and Nicole Fatzer at Spring Home Assisted Living.  We are immensely grateful for the placement sites’ flexibility in scheduling our students.

One project that Nicole Fatzer persistently brought to completion at Spring Home was an enjoyable terrarium project, the results of which are pictured below.
