The following information should be used as a starting point for your consideration of AI in your classroom. Please consult your Department Chair for any Department- or College-specific policies and procedures related to this topic.

Individual instructors should feel empowered to create policies specific to the use of AI models in their own classrooms. Please consider the following when doing so:

  1. Understand the tools available to you and your students.

An important element in creating AI policies for the use of these tools in the classroom is a clear understanding of the tools' strengths and limitations, as well as the ability to detect their usage.

  2. Encourage the ethical exploration of AI tools.

The ever-growing presence of AI models in all spaces should encourage institutions of higher learning to challenge their students to consider the ethical implications for AI usage while also empowering them to learn more about the abilities and limitations of these tools.

  3. Consider instructional design that recognizes the presence of AI.

One of the most effective ways to discourage the unethical use of AI is to understand the way AI can be used and plan your instruction and assessment accordingly.

  4. Make policies related to the use of AI clear and accessible.
While the unethical use of collaborative tools is already covered in the shared syllabus section "Academic Misconduct," we suggest adding an independent statement specifically addressing AI usage to course syllabi.

Those assignments which allow or call for AI use will be expressly listed as such and require proper citation and documentation. Open use of AI models for assistance in completion of assignments is not permitted and constitutes academic misconduct.”
    • Allowance without Restriction - “The use of artificial intelligence models for assistance in completion of work for this course shall be treated as collaborative work and should be properly documented and cited, regardless of the degree to which the models have been utilized.”
