Help and hope for families and friends of alcoholics
About us
Al-Anon Family Group's purpose is to provide help and hope to families and friends of alcoholics. The Al-Anon Family Groups, which include Alateen for teenagers, provide support and encouragement to anyone affected by someone else's drinking. There are no dues or fees for membership. Attendance of Alateen is limited to teenagers and the adult Al-Anon members who are certified as Alateen Group Sponsors. Individuals referred to Al-Anon and Alateen groups benefit from contact with their peers who have similar experiences and are applying the Al-Anon program to their daily lives. They learn the facts about a relative or friend's addiction to alcohol and how it affects all who are close to the drinker as well as the drinker. Al-Anon and Alateen groups meet locally in over 118 countries. There are also electronic meetings (via email, telephone, and social media). Information about Al-Anon Family Groups is available in English, Spanish, and French on our website. Note: 1. “Al-Anon gave me hope and it continues to give me hope – hope to become a better person. Hope to live a good productive life while still loving the alcoholics in my life.” ~ Anonymous Al-Anon Member 2021 Al-Anon Membership Survey #AlAnonMembershipSurvey #AlAnon #Alateen #FamilyRecovery #FamilyDisease #alcoholism #addiction #12Step #AA

“I could not have found true peace, better relationships with my loved ones, or ways to enjoy living again without Al-Anon. The life experience of others who had already found help in Al-Anon and were willing to help me are lifelong treasures. The friendships I made are indescribable. “For the newcomer – try a few different meetings for at least six weeks and introduce yourself to at least two members in that time. Read and learn the 12 Steps, too. Just listening in meetings will give you encouragement and a pathway to a much better way of living in spite of what the alcoholic is doing.” ~ Anonymous Al-Anon Member 2021 Al-Anon Membership Survey #AlAnonMembershipSurvey #AlAnon #Alateen #FamilyRecovery #FamilyDisease #alcoholism #addiction #12Step #AA

“I read articles, listened to podcasts, and talked to recovering alcoholics, but when I attended a lecture on the neurophysiological aspect of the disease and saw pictures of the brain and the actual region that activates cravings and such, I totally got it! Now I understood that my son was telling the truth when he said he wasn’t doing this to hurt me. I could see the fear in his eyes, and I realized that he was as clueless as to why he couldn’t stop as I was.” “Understanding how alcoholism affects my son—and me,” “The Forum,” May 2024 Family recovery is what this mother needed. She wanted to help her son but didn’t know how. Luckily, her family counselor knew about Al-Anon and gave her a referral to the program. Have you considered how your patients or clients could benefit from participation in the Al-Anon program? With a referral from you to a local or virtual Al-Anon, or Alateen for teens, meeting, your clients will: 🔹Learn the facts about addiction to alcohol and how it can impact their lives physically, emotionally, and spiritually even though they might not be the one with the drinking problem. 🔹Benefit from the peer support they receive from others who have similar problems. 🔹Find ways to improve their own attitudes and behaviors through the study and practice of Al‑Anon’s Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions. There is no advance notification or written referral necessary to attend an Al-Anon or Alateen meeting. Your clients can find a meeting that works for them on our website. If you would like more information about the Al-Anon program before referring your clients, consider observing an Al-Anon meeting. Professionals are welcome to attend any Al-Anon meeting designated as “Families, Friends and Observers Welcome."
