Our saliva "self-serve" test allows you to pick up a test at a time and place that works best for you, spit in the tube, and drop it off.
This free testing is for asymptomatic faculty, staff, and enrolled students at the University of Utah (must have a University ID - uNID - and password to sign in).
While the hours and locations are now much more convenient, please note that any samples dropped off after 11am on Friday will not be picked up until Monday morning. We strongly encourage you to provide your sample during a weekday instead of over the weekend.
NOTE:
- If you are symptomatic, or if you are a household member who doesn’t have a uNID, or if you have a uNID and simply prefer to visit a facilitated testing site, click here to schedule an appointment on campus.
Sign in with your uNID and password, sign the consent form, confirm that you have done the collection correctly, and link your uNID to the kit before dropping the sample off.
Please watch the video and follow the instructions below.
- Please do not come on campus for a self-test if you are experiencing COVID symptoms. (Exception: U Health employees who are symptomatic may visit the Eccles Health Science Library location for a self test.)
- Ensure that you do not eat or drink within 30 minutes of providing saliva sample
- Pick up a test kit at any of our self-serve locations
- Proceed to a location where you are well distanced from any other individuals
- Remove orange cap from vial and place funnel on top.
- Drool until vial is ¾ of the way full (i.e. to the top of the small barcode)
- Saliva should be clear and free of bubbles (though some bubbles may pass the ¾ mark)
- Ensure that the sample contains only saliva and not dense material (i.e. phlegm, etc.)
- It may help to slightly lift the funnel to get the saliva to settle down
- You may use the toothpick to help pop bubbles and push saliva down
- Once full to ¾ of the way, gently tighten the orange cap back onto the vial and return the vial to the plastic bag. You may discard the rest of the items (instruction page, toothpick, funnel).
- Complete the registration of your sample by visiting https://meval.med.utah.edu/covidqtself/
- Put only the vial containing your saliva back in the plastic bag and drop it off in the red box at any of our drop-off locations.
- You can pick up and drop off samples Monday-Friday at any time that the above-listed locations are open.
- IMPORTANT: While the hours and locations are now much more convenient, please note that any samples dropped off after 11am on Friday will not be picked up until Monday morning. We strongly encourage you to provide your sample during a weekday instead of over the weekend.
- Test results will be returned to your uMail address within 12-48 hours of drop-off.
