Action! The Anatomy of LeRoy Neiman's Champions

  • Opening Reception: 7–9 p.m., November 21, 2016

The traveling exhibit was organized by the LeRoy Neiman Foundation in New York with the Louisiana State University Museum of Art in Baton Rouge. Neiman (1921-2012) is known for his popular and colorful, semi-abstract paintings of sports figures, but he also was a master draftsman with a remarkable ability to capture figures in motion. He was influenced by artists of New York’s Ashcan School, an important part of the Hillstrom Museum of Art’s collection. Neiman was originally from Minnesota, where his first teacher was Clement Haupers (1900-1982)), an artist well known in the state who was a friend of Museum namesake Richard L. Hillstrom, who collected his works widely.

Made in U.S.A.: Rosenquist/Ruscha

  • Opening Reception: 7–9 p.m., February 13, 2017

The exhibition features works by two of America’s top Pop artists, Ed Ruscha (born 1937) and James Rosenquist (born 1933), contrasting the cool, west coast approach of the former with the frantic, east coast work of the latter. The exhibition was formed from Collections from Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation; Schnitzer is an avid collector who generously shares his collection for exhibitions, especially in college and university galleries and museums. This exhibition is being supported by a generous grant from the Carl and Verna Schmidt Foundation.

Concurrent with Made in U.S.A.: Rosenquist/Ruscha, the Museum will present a selection of Recent Acquisitions that includes works by artists Maurice Prendergast (1858-1924), Childe Hassam (1859-1935), George Luks (1867-1933), Leon Lundmark (1875-1942), William Zorach (1887-1966), Adolf Dehn (1895-1968), Voldermars Gutmanis (1904-1988), and Dale Chilhuly (born 1941). The works on view have been acquired either by purchase using funds donated for that purpose or by direct donation or bequest, and the donors include David and Kathryn Gilbertson, Gene and Ann Basset, Dawn and Edward Michael, Richard L. Hillstrom, the Cavara Family, Kraushaar Galleries of New York, and the estate of Raymond A. Reister and Ruth A. Reister.

Musical Performance:
In conjunction with the Hillstrom Museum of Art's exhibition Almost Home: The Return of Holocaust Survivors and Resisters to Postwar Vienna, a program of songs by Austrian-born composer Hanns Eisler (1898-1962) will be presented on Tuesday, January 10, 2006, at 7:30 in Björling Recital Hall. Eisler was the father of Georg Eisler, who is profiled in the Almost Home exhibition. Eisler studied with Arnold Schönberg (1874-1951) and was a collaborator with Bertolt Brecht (1898-1956). He left Europe because of the rise of the Nazis, and settled in California, where he later became a target of the Hollywood "witch hunt." He appeared before the HUAC in September of 1947, and was forced to leave the U.S. in 1948.

Singer David Harris and pianist Craig Randal Johnson will present a program of Eisler's songs, some in their original German, others in translations by Eric Bentley, the scholar, playwright and critic who is a foremost authority on Weimar Germany and who knew Eisler. Harris and Johnson are both experts on the composer's music and have collaborated numerous times to present it to the public. Their program, titled "Burning and Never Going Cold: The Music of Hanns Eisler," is free and open to the public. The presentation of Eisler's music by Harris and Johnson is a joint project of the Hillstrom Museum of Art, the Music Department, and the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures.

Opening Reception September 27, 6:00-8:00 PM

Included in the Recent Acquisitions exhibition will be FOCUS IN/ON, an extended consideration of a recently acquired lithograph by Kerr Eby (1889-1946) titled Where Do We Go? and dating c. 1919-1920. Eby's print was published by him in his 1936 book War, along with numerous other eyewitnessed images from World War I and a passionate anti-war essay by the artist. The didactic material for this focus exhibition was written in collaboration with Loramy Gerstbauer, Director of the College's Peace Studies Program, and initiates this new program of the Museum, which will explore in depth particular individual objects from the Hillstrom Collection, drawing when possible on the expertise of others at the College.
