Description

A lunch-time series of virtual and in-person conversations featuring professionals from a variety of backgrounds unpacking big ideas present in our Fall 2021 exhibition at the Haas Center for Performing Arts titled Honest & Unrefined: Art Outside the Academy

This Unpacking the Exhibition Conversation is about art and power. Join Kevin Buist and Paula Santos for a deep dive discussion about the power of arts institutions and the art market to include, exclude, and attribute value to art and artists. We'll put the exhibition artwork into context and illuminate power dynamics in the art world in order to broaden our understanding of 'outsider art'.

Kevin Buist is an independent curator, writer, and former Artistic Director of ArtPrize, where he oversaw artists, operations, and design. He holds a MA in Visual and Critical Studies from Kendall College of Art and Design. His writing has been featured in numerous print and online publications including Art Forum, the Art:21 Blog, where he was a Blogger in Residence, MNartists.org, Michigan Quarterly Review, and kevinbuist.com/blog. He has presented academic papers at the Institute for the Study of Latin American Art at NYU and the College Art Association Annual Conference. He has delivered lectures at many conferences and events, including The International Council of Fine Arts Deans’ Annual Conference, Museum Next, the University & College Designers Association Conference, and more.

Paula Santos is a museum educator with Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art in Chicago who relishes teaching diverse and multigenerational audiences. She has over a decade of experience in museums such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Brooklyn Museum and the Whitney Museum. She is a graduate of the Leadership in Museum Education masters program at Bank Street College and earned her bachelor’s degree in art history from Williams College. In addition to her career in museums, she is the host of Cultura Conscious, a podcast on why and how museum and cultural workers work with community.

Space is limited. RSVP Required.
