Greetings Friend,

The division of SCL has a renewed focus on “Us”, an opportunity to look inward at ourselves and our culture. In support of this priority and in concert with a broader University initiative, we are pleased to present a platform to unify and develop Supervising@Cornell and to take a closer look at what leadership means within our division.
Please view the video below on the impact of Leadership, by Sara Canaday, a leadership development expert on LinkedIn
(To watch the full video from which this clip was found, please visit the training on lynda.com. )
Why are we focused on supervision and leadership?

Supervisors have an important role in facilitating a workplace culture of respect and belonging, inspiring a shared vision, and ensuring excellence in our work. It is widely accepted that experiences with one’s direct supervisor is the top reason staff choose to stay in or leave an organization. We owe it to all our staff in SCL to have highly skilled and empowered supervisors to help the division as a whole reach its fullest potential.

In addition, our recent SCL staff survey as well as data from the university’s exit survey have given us a glimpse into areas that SCL supervisors are generally known for performing quite well in and others that we may need to emphasize further.
Again, these are general findings, we know and appreciate that individual experiences differ.
What is the Supervising program?

Over the next few months we will be introducing a series of supervisory modules based on Cornell University’s  7 Leadership Skills for Success .

This program, Supervising@Cornell , will be supported and enhanced by practical learning and sharing throughout our division.

As each module is rolled out we will send an email introducing the topic, give you a framework around what you will learn from the courses provided, and most importantly , highlight our own SCL supervisors who are known for exemplifying that skill in their day-to-day work. We will look to offer opportunities to connect supervisors across the division and engage with each other as we take on each module, to provide a networking and supportive base for our all SCL supervisor s

How do I start?

To kickoff this program and before you can participate in any of the modules moving forward you must first watch the Supervising@Cornel l Welcome Video which includes:

  • An introduction by Mary Opperman, Chief Human Resources Officer, who shares the importance of the role of supervisor and the impact it has on the organization

  • University leadership views on the supervisor role as well as examples of great leadership

  • Information around the pillars, values, and priorities of a supervisor

We will be rolling out the first module in early June so we ask that you complete the 12 minute Welcome Video by the end of May.
We are in this together!

Our hope is that by having SCL supervisors complete the modules in the same time frame, we will have a basis for common understanding and rich discussion around these topics. We are firm believers that developing our leadership skills is work that is never done, regardless of the amount of time you have spent in a leadership role.

In a recent conversation with divisional leaders, Vice President Lombardi remarked that when it comes to leadership development , “It’s important that we take the opportunity to reflect on a lifelong, on-going process, which requires a level of vulnerability and authenticity around our human nature…we are all works in progress.”

We look forward to engaging with you in the months to come around these important learning opportunities!

Cheers,
