Would you say that we’re living in the post-everything world where every fashions are already done?

Do I think that all fashions have already been done? No, I don’t think so anymore. No art or all music, or all literature has been done. It’s true that with postmodernism you have a lot of retro fashion going on, a lot of constant referencing of the past. This is partly because of the demand for fashion coming faster and faster. So that when designers are on that treadmill where they have to drop new material every few weeks, it’s just become essential to be looking constantly at the images from the past. But especially because there is newer technologies and also developments within street style you do still keep getting change and condimental change. So it hasn’t all been done but sometimes it seems so when you notice the repetitive retro things on the runway.

And how does streetwear development change fashion?

Streetstyle has had two somewhat different meanings. One being the subcultural style like Punks and Goths, and the other is the kind of sportswear, athletic wear, that everybody is wearing, jeans or yoga pants and sneakers, and hoodies. And that’s become completely ubiquitous, it’s really infiltrated mainstream fashion and high fashion as well. So that all of the big luxury companies are producing jogging pants and cashmere hoodies. Everyone makes snickers. That is, I think, an unstoppable force. It’s really a continuation of rise of casual fashion which began more than 100 years ago and has just become more and more powerful for the last 30 or 40 years. People insist that they don’t have to dress for anybody else, they are dressing for themselves and declare comfort being a really high priority.

london fashion

Also I think that the prestige of athletic fashion has continued to grow. So that even when people are not remotely athletic, remotely connected with any kind of hip subculture, skateboarding or anything like that, they want to look as if they were athletic. I think there are many young people who have never worn leather shoes, they’ve only worn sneakers. And there are young people for whom blue jeans are too uncomfortable, too stiff. They want something that’s more fluid. And because of long-term trends starting with casual Fridays and then with the rise of the internet tycoon dressed in t-shirt and sweatpants, that has made it seem that this way to dress is actually cooler for successful men. It had less impact on women than men but still it’s there. And it’s been assimilated very rapidly in high fashion.

Sport in life

You’ve been studying corsets for a really long time. Do you think that in terms of fashion getting more casual as you say there is still oppressive elements in women’s clothes?

Well, oppressive is a very strong word. One thing I’ve noticed with corsetry is that my students used to ask: «Why do people stop wearing corsets?» And I would sometimes tease them and say: «They didn’t really». We’ve internalized it through diet, and exercise, and plastic surgery. In fact it''s kind of ironic — I was looking at what Montaigne wrote in 1600s and he said: «You know, people have perfectly good teeth pulled out to make their mouths look better and they have their skin treated, pilled off to make new younger skin». And I thought, it sounds like cosmetic surgery, it just gotten more adapt. So in some way it replaced the corset. On the other hand people are still often reluctant to go under the knife or under the liposuction syringe. So you still have all the Spanx underwear which to me is hideous and uncomfortable. I would much rather wear a bone corset than a Spanx. Also the Kardashians touting those so-called waist-trainers which are kind of modern rubberised corsetry. And they only make the same bogus claims that it will actually melt your fat away and if you wear it, you’ll actually be getting thinner. Whereas of course if you take off the waist-trainer or corset, all the fat just spreads out again. So it’s interesting that, on the one hand, if you don’t want to go to plastic surgeon, you can go back to this corsetry with waist-trainers and Spanx.

The Corset: Fashioning the Body

Are there any new fetishes in the modern world?

I think yes. I remember once after I gave a lecture about shoe fetishism, one student came up and she said: «What kind of shoe should I wear for not to attract any horrible pervert?» And I said: «I can only tell you which one are most popular. More men like high heels. And more men like shiny leather. Some like boots». But there are people who will like sneakers. And there is going to be more and more people who will like sneakers because most fetishists implant on fetish when they’re very young. So as most mothers stop wearing high heels and start wearing sneakers, the children will begin to fetishize sneakers as well. In a way it could be anything. We think of certain materials like leather and latex as being natural fetish materials, but in the 19th century it was much more likely to be something like satin or even starched linen. People could become fixated on things that were part of the wardrobe. As we get new materials or even as we get new prosthetic devices, you’ll find people fetishizing those. Everyone is getting more bionic, they replace knees and hips. So that is a kind of thing that could easily get fetishized.

from the book "China Chic: East Meets West"
by Valerie Steele and John S. Major

You did a lot for fashion to become one of the academic studies but it seems that academic fashion and fashion industry don’t really speak to each other much. Do you agree?

I think they’re speaking to each other more than they used to. In the past most fashion industry people were afraid that fashion studies would somehow take the magic away from fashion. But now many people are getting jobs at fashion companies, for example making the archives. I also think that many people who’ve gotten Master’s degree and PhDs in fashion in addition to work at museums have sometimes gotten jobs as fashion journalists as well. I think it introduces a new level of knowledge into journalism. I think people not only want to be entertained about fashion, but also they like to learn things about fashion history.

Could you comment on the projects that you are working on right now?

In February I’m opening a new show because the Museum of FIT will have its 50th anniversary in 2019. In 50 years we’ve mounted more than 200 fashion exhibitions. So my colleagues and I chose 33 of the most influential and we’re going to create an exhibition «50 years of Museum of FIT» which will include little vignettes of those 33 shows. That''s going to be quite fun to go back to like 1973 when we made «Paul Poiret: The kind of Fashion» show and 1987 «Fashion and Surrrealism», 1997 — «China Chic» and so on. And the next fall I’m preparing «Paris capital of fashion». It’s going to be more than 300 years of Paris as a fashion capital, as probably the pre-eminent fashion capital. Even now in the world of multiple fashion cities.

In September I opened "Pink: The History of a Punk, Pretty, Powerful Color". I’ve been working on that for about 2,5 years. I was struck by seeing more and more pink in fashion. Worn by men as well as women. And some of the different shades of pink. And also I’ve been reading the great French color historian Michel Pastoureau. I thought since he obviously didn’t like pink very much, and part dedicated to this color even in his new book is very small, I thought I could make a contribution to the history of color and history of fashion by focusing on that. And I’ve been very pleased at how popular it’s been. Because we went beyond, because earlier it showed pink on girls versus blue on boys. And we do look at the feminization of pink but we also look at erotic aspects of pink, and the international multicultural aspects of pink, and political aspects of pink too, the way it’s been associated with feminism and protest politics.

When you mount an exhibition, do you also try to make it looking good on Instagram?

You’re bound to that too. When we did the Pink show, I deliberately set up an Instagram moment. When we collected a lot of children’s toys and children’s clothes from the 1950’s and we just did a pink diorama with all of this so people could instagram that. And it had a huge success. They can’t be behind glass, they have to be able to catch it. We’ve got to dye down those Barbies, My little ponies and all the other pink toys including the staff that I had when I was a child.

Any advise for the young?

It’s helpful if you try and visualise where you wanna go and be flexible about that. Don’t just say «I’m gonna be fashion editor of this big magazine», but think, try to visualise what you can do, what you really good at, what value will somebody have by hiring you rather than someone else. Work hard and try to think ahead what you’re working on, how this will prepare you to be better at the things you wanna do. Try to think of some skills that can go also for a different job because the jobs are changing constantly. Be nice! This is one of the most important things when you’re hired or when people are looking to hire you. Nobody wants to hire someone who’s a troublemaker or a complainer, they want someone who is hardworking and who can get along and help their colleagues.
