... the College of Arts & Sciences policies on Research Assignments, Fellowships, and
Off-Campus Assignments.
To understand CAS policies related to fellowships and other off-campus assignments, consult CAS Policies on Research Assignments, Fellowships, and Off-Campus Assignments. The document contains guidance related to one-semester Junior Off-Campus Assignments (JOCAs) for tenure-track Assistant Professors, one-semester Research Assignments for competitively-selected tenured faculty, externally-funded fellowships, and externally-funded course buyouts. It also contains a glossary, FAQs, and related forms. Some key points:
- CAS policy is to match the fellowship stipend, up to 50% of the recipient's base salary for the fellowship term.
- A fellowship cannot be used to increase the recipient's base salary.
- Tenured and tenure-track faculty members should not expect to receive an off-campus assignment (and CAS salary support) more than once every 3 years. A tenured faculty member may be awarded a Research Assignment once every 5 years.
- If a fellowship stipend is less than 50% of the base salary, the faculty member can choose to accept the fellowship and receive less than full salary for the fellowship term.
- Many faculty seek to combine a Research Assignment with an externally-funded fellowship to allow for a year at full pay.
- Before applying for an externally-funded fellowship or grant-funded course buyout, faculty should obtain the department head's approval using the appropriate form. Send the signed form to the CAS Office of Research.
- Faculty should route the fellowship proposal through Cayuse SP prior to submission, even if the sponsor allows the faculty member to submit directly to the sponsor.
