Welcome to the Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication at Rowan University!

As an affiliate of the Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication at Florida International University, we work collaboratively across our campuses and throughout the country to promote gender equity and foster advancements for women working in all fields of communication, both in academia and in industry. We are committed to empowering women as leaders in communication and upholding diversity and inclusion initiatives in communication practice and research for all, regardless of gender identification. We provide access to renowned guest speakers, mentoring, networking events, and virtual workshops for the benefit of undergraduates, graduate students, early professionals, and seasoned communication experts alike.

Meet the Team

Dr. Julie Haynes, Professor of Communication Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies, has been named Director of the Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication at Rowan University. Dr. Haynes’ research explores how categories of identity, such as gender, race, and class, influence public discourse, particularly in mediated and pop culture settings. She is especially interested in how regional identity complicates or enriches our understanding of self and place, and frequently writes on gender and region in the areas of reality television, horror, sport, and country music. Her work has been presented at numerous national and international conferences, including at Oxford University, and published in edited volumes and journals, such as Feminist Media Studies. Her dissertation on gender in country music videos is housed at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Library and Archives and was consulted in the making of Ken Burns’ documentary, Country Music. She teaches a variety of courses including, Rhetorical Criticism, Images of Gender in Popular Culture, Rhetoric of Sport, Women and Gender in Perspective, Hitchcock and Gender, Rhetoric of Reality Television, Gender and Horror, and Rhetoric of Social Protest and Resistance. She is a Bildner Fellow and previously served as the Associate Dean of the College of Communication and Creative Arts.

As an affiliate of the Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication, we share the organization's primary mission and goals.These are: 

Goals

  • Serve as a thought-leadership center for research and professional development for the next generation of women leaders in communication and those who support them.
  • Mentor the next generation of young scholars and professionals as they build careers in communication.
  • Initiate programs for young, diverse women, and those interested in supporting them, who are commencing careers in communication industries in order to prepare them to enter and succeed in the workplace.
  • Recognize the achievements of female leaders and leaders who support women in communication industries and the academy.
  • Provide training programs centered around ensuring diversity and inclusion in the communication professions through embracing change, innovation, and entrepreneurialism in a variety of programs throughout the year.

Florida International University

The Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver Center for the Advancement of Women in Communication at FIU was established in 2012 by Dean Emeritus and Professor Dr. Lillian Lodge Kopenhaver as a pioneering site for the advancement of women in the field of communication. For more than three decades, Dr. Kopenhaver has been a tireless advocate for women in communication and envisions this Center to lead the way for future generations of communicators, professionals and scholars.
