Brothers Nick and Peter Furgiueles grew up on a steady diet of rock and roll, and it only takes one listen to Gringo Star’s new song “Magic” to hear that these guys know their way around a riff. Plenty of bands draw liberally from power pop and garage rock, but few are discriminating enough to know exactly which parts to take from each and which to leave on the cutting room floor. Their aesthetic is pure garage, the kind of thing that can’t be faked but is born after years of touring in sweaty basements and rock clubs. It’s the melodies, however, that really set these guys apart from your standard-issue rock revivalists. “Magic” lives up to its name by reminding us of all the ways a song can make us shake in the body and in the soul. But the song’s title actually came from something a bit more literal. “The song gets its sound from using our Tascam 38 tape machine to make loops that sound like Tinker Bell’s magic wand,” explains Peter. “It’s a guitar song written on piano.”
