Solar for Students

Grants from the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation are distributed in four focus areas (human needs, environmental stewardship, education, community vitality) and are limited to organizations defined as tax-exempt under Section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code.

Grant applications will be accepted online during two annual grant cycles, one in the spring and one in the fall.

Most grant awards range from $1,000 to $15,000, while higher amounts may be awarded when a program is an exceptional fit. We often receive funding requests far in excess of our Foundation budget. Regrettably we must often decline support for otherwise worthy proposals. Such a response does not reflect on Dominion Energy's view of the value of the organization or its services.

Grant Eligibility

The primary interest of our foundation is to support programs and specific projects. Consequently, support of capital campaigns is limited and provided on an exceptional basis. We do not typically fund university research projects or endow chairs.

Foundation grant support is available to:

  • Not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organizations
  • Organizations within geographic areas where Dominion Energy provides electricity or natural gas service, or has significant facilities or business interests. This includes Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina (Northeast region), Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and West Virginia (Grant and Tucker Counties).
  • Organizations that focus on education, environment, culture and the arts, civic and community development, and health and human services

Foundation grant support is NOT available to:

  • Tangible benefits, including tickets to events and utility payments to Dominion Energy or any of its subsidiaries or affiliates
  • Individuals
  • Religious programs of churches or other sectarian organizations
  • Fraternal, political, advocacy or labor organizations
  • Projects or organizations that are not located within geographic areas where Dominion Energy provides electricity or natural gas service, or has significant facilities or business interests, as listed above
  • Organizations without 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status
  • Organizations that limit membership and services based on race, religion, color, creed, sex, age or national origin
  • Advertising for benefit or courtesy purposes
  • Travel-related events, including student trips or tours
  • Memorial campaigns

Note to organizations in Ohio, Utah, and North Carolina:

In 2023, Dominion Energy announced that Enbridge would acquire Dominion Energy Ohio, Dominion Energy Utah/Wyoming/Idaho and Dominion Energy North Carolina gas. Due to this transition, the Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation is no longer making grants in these areas. Further information about Enbridge’s grant application process will be communicated by Enbridge pending each utility’s close. Enbridge is committed to maintaining a significant presence in the communities it serves, supporting local charitable organizations, promoting economic development, and delivering programs and services that customers value.
