Makay Hansen Awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

Recent Colorado College graduate and men's lacrosse player Makay Hansen was named a recipient of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, which is awarded to a select group of student-athletes who excel academically and athletically. Nationwide across all NCAA divisions, only 21 scholarships are awarded for both men and women from each sports season (fall, winter and spring).

Hansen compiled a 3.63 grade-point average and graduated on May 28, earning a bachelor's degree with a double major in economics and political science. He will attend law school at Tulane University this fall.

"We are so proud of Makay," Colorado College lacrosse coach Mike Horowitz said. "He embodies everything a student-athlete is about. He is hard-working, selfless and a leader. I know he will continue those qualities at Tulane."

This past spring, Hansen finished second on the team with 43 points (29g,14a) and became the 14th player in program history to score 100 career goals. He ended his stellar career with 107 goals and 32 assists, good for 139 points and 16th on CC's all-time list.

Hansen, from Dallas, Texas, was a first-team all-SCAC selection following his sophomore campaign when he was second in the league with 39 goals and fourth with 48 points. He helped the Tigers win back-to-back Heartland Collegiate Lacrosse Conference titles and appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament the last two years.

"I am deeply honored and excited to be awarded this post-graduate scholarship by the NCAA as I start law school at Tulane this fall," Hansen said. "I was blessed with amazing teammates during my time at Colorado College. I would like to thank Coach Horowitz, Professor and FAR Olivia Hatton, Professor Maria Sanchez, and David Ditchman for their great support in the scholarship process."

Candidates for the postgraduate scholarship are nominated by the school's faculty athletics representative and screened by regional selection committees. Recipients then are selected by the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee.

To qualify for the $10,000 scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) and have been a member of a varsity team. Recipients also must intend to continue academic work beyond the bachelor's degree as a full-time or part-time graduate student.

"Makay is the whole package: a gifted student, a hardworking and talented athlete, and a real leader both in the CC and broader community," said Olivia Hatton, CC's faculty athletics representative. "His passion for community service, combined with his desire to blend his love for sport with his law degree, made him a very strong candidate. This is a tremendous accomplishment that reflects his hard work and dedication as a CC Tiger."

The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports.
