Compare MFA Second Factor Options


 

To participate in UNCG multi-factor authentication (MFA), you must enroll and set up a device (e.g. cell phone or mobile device) as a "second factor," which will combine with your UNCG username and password ("first factor") to identify yourself to systems and services protected by multi-factor authentication.

UNCG MFA supports the following types of second factors: (This option is less secure and will soon be obsolete.)

You will choose one of the above for your primary second factor. We advise you to have one (or more) backup second factor.

When you should choose...

Microsoft Authenticator App Push Notifications (Smartphones or Tablets)

Information Technology Services (ITS) strongly recommends a smartphone or tablet for your primary second factor.

  • When you should make this choice: ITS recommends this choice for your primary second factor, anytime a smartphone or tablet is available. There is no additional cost associated with this option (beyond normal cellular service costs). The Microsoft Authenticator App Push Notifications Push Notifications employ an easy, one-click process to accomplish multi-factor authentication.
  • Cost: Using a smartphone or tablet as a second factor entails no additional cost (beyond your normal cellular service). The app is FREE from iTunes for iOS devices and from Google Play for Android devices.
Microsoft Authenticator App Code Generation (Smartphones or Tablets)
  • When you should make this choice: Choose this option if you would prefer to generate a code or are in an area where internet connectivity is an issue. After setting up the Microsoft Authenticator App, code generation is independent of network connectivity.
  • Cost: No cost besides the data usage to install the application. The app is FREE from iTunes for iOS devices and from Google Play for Android devices.
