Inspiring a Volunteer Movement

Church Collaboration through serving as Childcare Volunteers

What is the YoungLives Childcare Camp Church Collaboration?

The YoungLives Childcare Camp Church Collaboration is a vital part of our Inspiring a Volunteer Movement. It is designed to foster partnerships between Young Life areas and local church communities by providing volunteer opportunities at YoungLives camps. Through this collaboration, church volunteers can serve as childcare volunteers during camp weeks, creating a supportive environment for young parents attending the camp.

What’s the benefit?

For Young Life areas — By inviting a church group to volunteer as childcare, you can introduce a new group of people to Young Life, potentially building/increasing the leader, volunteer, and donor base for an established area or a new start-up area.

For churches — Participating in this initiative offers churches the unique opportunity to engage congregants in meaningful service, supporting teen parents and their children directly. Volunteers experience personal growth and spiritual enrichment, fostering a sense of community and shared purpose both within their church and with the broader Young Life family. Churches also strengthen their outreach and mission impact by connecting with a diverse group of young families and other volunteers from different backgrounds.

YoungLives areas — By inviting a church group to volunteer as childcare, you can introduce a new group, even current Young Life supporters, to YoungLives and its mission. This also potentially builds/increases the leader, volunteer, and donor base for an established area or a new start-up area. We have seen churches send volunteers to camp who have returned home to their churches and communities to start ministry to teen parents with YoungLives.

How do I get started?

  1. Connect with your YoungLives regional coordinator or divisional coordinator: Strategize about which churches to approach and where there is a desire to see ministry started.
  2. Present to potential churches: If you need guidance on starting a conversation with a pastor or clergy, reach out to Bebe Hobson, vice president of Multiethnic, Church and Ministry Collaboration. You can also use these resources provided by YoungLives, including informational videos and slideshows to introduce the collaboration to your church community.
    1. Partnering with Churches Video. Use this great introduction video for potential participants.
    2. Church group training. Use this slide deck to engage your church childcare volunteers. Notes on the deck will help you know what to say. There are optional ideas for additional follow-up with your group.
    3. Welcome Email. Customize this email template and send to interested candidates.
  3. Begin volunteer mobilization: Organize a meeting or a series of discussions in your church to gauge interest and discuss the logistics of participating. You can show the partnering video at your church to help people visually connect with what camp looks like.
  4. Train and prepare: Each volunteer will need to complete an application along with other required forms. YoungLives provides administrators for each camp week to facilitate the preparation process, ensuring a seamless and rewarding experience for all volunteers.
  5. Complete final steps: Schedule a pre-camp paperwork party to complete all necessary paperwork and a final pre-trip meeting to finalize details. Ensure all volunteers are prepared and clear on what to expect.
