Americana Highways brings you this premiere of Sasha K.A’s song “Rolling Sky,” from his forthcoming release Family, which is due to be released on Feb 21. Family was produced by Sasha Klare-Ayvazian and Charlie Kramsky; engineered and mixed by Charlie Kramsky; and recorded at Austin Signal Studios.
“Rolling Sky” is Sasha Klare-Ayvazian on vocals, guitar, bass, drums, and piano. With a rolling beat, Sasha K.A. will ease you in and surround you with remorseful, yet somehow healing, vibes.
“Rolling Sky” is about a charismatic, vibrant, beautiful, friend of mine who was crippled by drugs and alcohol.
I wrote this song and played all the instruments. I’m proud of the song and it is the only song I’ve written with an embedded key change. The verses are in E major and the choruses are in G major. When I play live, all I can do is play my guitar and sing. However, I am a multi-instrumentalist. My first instrument was drums.
I spent a year playing bass in the pit orchestra for the Media Theatre (Media, PA) and I spent three years studying Jazz piano under the mentorship of Jeff Hellmer (director of the UT Jazz Program). I absolutely LOVE recording because it gives me an opportunity to stretch my legs/skills and take on the roles I do not get to do regularly. I had Charlie Kramsky (engineer, producer) set up stations in the studio. Piano was mic’d, drums, a guitar setup, vocal booth. Everything was plugged in and ready to go and it was just the two of us in the studio. I jumped from instrument to instrument and we kept trying stuff and exploring. We produced the track together.It all came together in a day. Just so unbelievably creative and fun.
Finally, a little back story behind this song. I signed a publishing deal with Another Victory Publishing in January 2018. I recorded this song in the Summer of 2018. At that time I was trying to knock out a ton of new content to give to Another Victory for sync. I noticed my music was a lot like the music in This Is Us on NBC (a show I was watching with my wife). I recorded this song with the direct intention for placement on that show. Charlie and I spent a great deal of time listening to the Spotify This Is Us playlist and modeled our production design off what we heard. The approach and production was shaped by songs like: “If Ever I Was A Child” (Wilco), “Northern Sky” (Nick Drake), “The World’s Smiling Now” (Jim James), and “Good Shepherd” (Jefferson Airplane). Regrettably this song did not make the show. But it is one of my favorite songs and I am so happy to have it and feature it on Family. — Sasha K.A
