Students, faculty and staff from The University of Texas at Arlington celebrated Maverick students at the 10th annual Lavender Graduation. The UTA celebration, also held on campuses across the country, honored LGBTQ+ students and their allies who will graduate at UTA commencement ceremonies next month at Globe Life Field.

Teresa ‘T’ Montez, a senior in the College of Business, said the event recognizes students for their contributions to the University.

“I hope me being here encourages more people to come from the College of Business and be celebrated in the future,” Montez said.

This year more than 60 students received a lavender stole or cord that they can wear during next month’s commencement ceremonies at Globe Life Field.

“I’ve watched this event grow from a small reception to celebrating over 60 students tonight,” said Liam Rhodes, intern for the LGBTQ+ program, who will be graduating from the School of Social Work and plans to pursue a graduate degree.

Mark Reeder, assistant director of campus visits and events, delivered the keynote address. He told students he hopes they remain lifelong learners.

“College is a huge milestone, and so now that you are here you should congratulate yourself,” Reeder said.
