What Makes It Through

Sara Groves’ 14th album and first collection of original songs since Floodplain (2015) is a reflection on events of the last several years.

Sara explains, “In Kazuo Ishiguro’s book The Buried Giant, a husband and wife are waking up to their own histories - the ways they have been wounded, and the ways they have hurt the other. The story inspired me to explore the role our memories play in forgiveness and reconciliation. What do we remember, what do we forget, and what do we memorialize? How can we move toward each other when we have different versions of what happened? We are imperfect witnesses to our own lives and histories, and in the end, it is really difficult to tell ourselves the truth.”

Working on both the interpersonal and communal level, the songs of What Makes It Through speak to the hard work of what it means to arrive at something like truth and reconciliation.

Patreon

Thank you for joining me on this journey, friend. For me, writing music has always been a way to express my heart and soul, and work out all of the things I am processing at any given time. It has been both hobby and career. Since I began recording in 1998 the music industry has changed a great deal, especially the part that translates my work into sustainable income. To put it simply, making music no longer pays for itself. Patreon and the financial support of my patrons has sustained me, allowing me to continue making music. The Patreon platform makes it simple for us to connect, and helps me feel less alone in this process. Historically, the arts have always required endowment and relationship. Patreon helps me cultivate this in today’s musical landscape. Never was this more evident than during 2020-2021. The sustaining financial gifts of patrons, as well as their friendship and kind support is what enabled me to come out of a pandemic having self-produced a new record. That simply could not have happened without my patrons. I have loved sharing the creative process with you. Thank you for your ideas and encouragement and for walking beside me. I am looking forward to seeing what happens through this new album. And if you’re new here, I invite you to join us as we continue bringing new music into the world.

peace and grace,

Sara
