Central football playoff road leads to Wisconsin

Dutch travel to No. 3 Wis.-Whitewater for quarterfinal game

PELLA—Central College will take its No. 10-ranked football squad to Whitewater, Wisconsin Saturday for an NCAA Division III quarterfinal round game at the No. 3-rated University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Game time is noon at Perkins Stadium.

The Dutch (12-0) rallied for a riveting 30-28 second-round win over No. 9 Wheaton College (Ill.) at home Saturday after outscoring No. 17 Bethel University (Minn.) 61-35 in the opening round at Pella Nov. 20.

Perennial power Wis.-Whitewater (12-0) hammered DePauw University (Ind.) at Whitewater Saturday 45-0 after running roughshod over Greenville University (Ill.) 69-7 Nov. 20, also at home.

Saturday's game will be the schools' fourth meeting and their third NCAA playoff clash. All have been at Whitewater, with the Warhawks winning two of the three previous games. The most recent was a 34-14 Dutch loss in the first round of the 2005 playoffs. The teams met in an NAIA postseason game in 1966, a 41-18 Wis.-Whitewater victory. Central's lone win in the series was in 1988, when back-up tight end Lance Kooiker came off the bench to rally the Dutch at quarterback after the team's top two signal-callers were injured in the previous two weeks. Rob Phipps kicked a late field goal for a 16-13 upset second-round win.

This year's Warhawks are outscoring opponents 42.9 to 10.5. The school has won five Division III football crowns, most recently in 2015. Wis.-Whitewater finished second in 2019 and has a glossy 55-11 Division III playoff record.
