FACULTY POSITION OPENINGS

The Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) at VUMC is seeking tenure-track and non-tenure track faculty candidates with expertise in the field of biomedical informatics. The Department is seeking and will consider candidates at all ranks.

The successful candidate will have a track record or promise of impactful work across the broad domains within the field of Biomedical Informatics, especially in alignment with VUMC's missions of discovery, clinical service, education, and leadership. VUMC's core mission of personalizing the patient experience through its caring spirit and distinctive capabilities relies heavily on the work DBMI leads. 

While we will consider candidates working across the range of biomedical informatics sub-domains, the Department is particularly interested in candidates who can advance its strategic areas, including:

Qualifications
The successful applicant should have the background and experience working in the field of biomedical informatics. Applicants must possess any of: 

  • PhD in biomedical informatics, computational biology, health data science or a closely related field
  • Advanced clinical training (MD, PharmD, or other clinical degree) and training or certification in biomedical informatics 
  • Candidates with other qualifications are welcome to inquire

    FINANCIAL ANALYST OPENING

    The Department of Biomedical Informatics (DBMI) at VUMC is seeking a Financial Analyst to develop, analyze, and conduct financial analyses to assess the viability of financial plans and programs, financial statements, compensation analyses, financial packages and presentations on various projects, under occasional guidance. Experience level: 2 years. Education: Bachelor's degree.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Develops projections to model the financial impact of programs and projects.
    • Designs, develops, and modifies financial forecasting models and simulations for programs. Accumulates and analyzes data from existing or established databases. 
    • Analyzes, accumulates and reviews data for financial reports. Conducts technical research and prepares synopses on relevant topics.
    • Assembles data and compiles drafts, outlines and graphic materials for financial presentations. Coordinates efforts of work group. 
    • Analyzes the effects of proposed federal and state statutes and regulatory actions which may impact long range financial planning. 
    • Analyses future trends and indicators in related areas of interest. Reviews data to analyze trends affecting budget needs.  

  • Alvin Jeffery Lab – Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunity

    Vanderbilt University School of Nursing (VUSN) is pleased to announce an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow in the area of health-related data science with Dr. Alvin Jeffery. This full-time position will provide a mentored training experience in preparation for an academic/industry research position.

    Training opportunities will be related to data science, machine learning, biomedical informatics, and health phenomena. Activities will include scientific computing, preparing research study protocols, data analysis, disseminating research findings, developing scientific manuscripts as lead author or co-author, presenting research findings at conferences, grant writing, mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, and performing other related duties.

    This particular position is partially (50%) funded by the National Institutes of Health (National Institute on Drug Abuse) to develop a framework that supports computational phenotyping of substance use disorders using electronic health record data. The long-term goal of the phenotyping framework is to support large genetics studies involving multiple organizations. While at least 50% of the position will be directly focused on this grant, the remaining 50% of the position will be focused on mutually-developed goals between the fellow and their mentor(s).

    • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work as a team member are essential.
    • Candidates should have a depth of python-based scientific computing experience, including experience with machine learning, natural language processing, and high-performance computing.
    • Skills should include computational phenotyping with EHR data.
    • The ideal candidate is someone with experience/interest in transformers and large language models.

    Vanderbilt Genomic Medicine Training Program – Postdoctoral Fellowship Opportunity

    The Vanderbilt Genomic Medicine (VGM) Training Program is now accepting postdoctoral fellowship applications. VGM includes a major focus in pharmacogenomics, precision phenotyping, medical informatics, and disease-based genomics. For more information, please click here. 

    The program has 32 highly collaborative and well-funded faculty preceptors who team up to provide both basic and clinical research training opportunities to both PhD level and MD level postdoctoral fellows. Trainees will participate in rotations, internships, seminars, journal clubs, and retreats and interact with other trainees and faculty. In addition, trainees will receive RCR training, high-standard Individual Development Plans (IDP), and the Career Development Programs. 

    Requirements

    Applicants must have been awarded a doctorate in biomedical sciences, medicine, or a related field. Some experience in computer science, statistics, informatics, and/or genetics is recommended but not required.

    Postdoctoral Fellowship in High-Throughput EHR Phenotyping – The Wei Lab

    The Wei Lab in the Center for Precision Medicine was founded to enable better research through better electronic health record (EHR) based phenotyping. Wei-Qi Wei, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor in Biomedical Informatics, is looking to recruit talented postdoctoral researchers with a passion for science to support numerous National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants in the area of EHR phenotyping, natural language processing (NLP), machine learning, PheWAS, and Pharmacogenomics research.

    Under Vanderbilt's Biomedical Research Education and Training (BRET) Office, the program will provide RCR training, high-standard Individual Development Plans (IDP), and the Career Development Programs. 

    Applicants must have been awarded a doctorate in biomedical informatics, medicine or a related field. Programming skills are required. A background in mathematics, computer science, biostatistics, biomedical informatics, medicine, and/or genetics is preferred but not required.

    Postdoctoral Position – The Walsh Lab

    The Walsh Lab, directed by Colin Walsh, MD, MA, is pleased to announce an opening for a fully-funded postdoctoral position. We are now accepting applications available for one year or two years depending on candidate interests. 

    This fellowship is in high-impact areas including decision support design and implementation enabled by predictive modeling and human-centered design, public health informatics, and probabilistic phenotyping to inform precision medicine. Fellows will interact with diverse project teams from multiple sectors including academics, public health and the military. 

    We're looking for a postdoctoral fellow with experience and interest in: 

    • Applied predictive modeling on healthcare data, especially electronic health records
    • A strong machine learning and biostatistical background
    • Collaborative, friendly, able to thrive in a busy, well-funded lab with multiple high-impact projects in parallel 
    • Python/R experience
    • Relational Database experience (a plus)

    Postdoctoral Opportunities – Biomedical Informatics and Data Science

    The Department of Biomedical Informatics at Vanderbilt University is accepting applications from postdoctoral trainees interested in the field of biomedical informatics and data science. 

    Our department is the largest academic department of biomedical informatics in the country, with more than 75 faculty members and a portfolio of research and development projects in fields as diverse as translational bioinformatics, clinical informatics and decision support, and biomedical data science. Trainees have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of informatics, explore research interests, join a thriving community of faculty, students, and alumni, and prepare for their research-focused career. 

    Candidates with graduate preparation in biomedical informatics or a closely allied field may apply for a non-degree postdoctoral position focused on mentored research. Candidates interested in formal informatics training may apply for a degree-seeking postdoctoral fellowship to complete the MS in Biomedical Informatics in addition to doing mentored research.
