12-year-old in custody after classmate hurt in shooting at NC middle school

HENDERSON COUNTY, N.C. — A 12-year-old student is in custody after police said his classmate was hurt in a shooting Tuesday morning at a North Carolina school gymnasium.

The shooting happened around 7:45 a.m. at Henderson Middle School in Henderson County.

In a joint press release from the Henderson County Public Schools and Hendersonville Police Department, officials said police responded to an incident involving a firearm on the school’s campus.

When police got there, they said they took a 12-year-old boy into custody and secured the weapon. The school was placed on lockdown.

According to officials, a 12-year-old girl was shot in the leg and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The hospital reports that she is in stable condition at this time.

Police said only one shot was fired. Around 35 people were inside the gymnasium at the time. No other injuries were reported.

According to authorities, after the shot was fired, the boy put his hands on top of his head and was taken into custody. He and his parents were taken to the Hendersonville Police Department.

Police have not said what led to the shooting.
