The VUMC Office of Diversity Affairs is making available buttons that employees and students can wear telling what pronouns the wearer uses, or, in one case, a conversation starter that simply says “Ask me about my pronouns!”
Other buttons available read “She/Her,” “He/Him,” “They/Them,” “She/They,” and He/They.”
“As we grow in our understanding of gender diversity, particularly as it affects the care and respect we give to our patients and colleagues, it’s critical that we model a welcoming environment,” said Del Ray Zimmerman, director of the Office for Diversity Affairs and LGBTQ Health.
“We hope these new pronoun buttons will help create a greater sense of belonging and provide a simple way to teach others how to treat us.”
Those wanting to get a button can pick one up in the Diversity Affairs office in 305 Light Hall, or people who work away from the main campus can contact the office to ask for buttons to be sent by mail.
“I have no doubt these buttons will serve as a great conversation starter to help us all expand our concepts of gender identity and inclusion,” Zimmerman said.
“I’d especially like to encourage colleagues to consider adding pronouns to email signatures, Zoom profiles and other applicable places.”
