If you have an interest in Japan or global culture, we think this is the summer program for you!
ELIGIBILITY: Globalize DC is pleased to invite DC public high school students (both DCPS and charter) to apply for its new summer program, “Japan in DC.” The program is offered at no cost to participating students. Twenty-two (22) students will be selected. Applicants must be current 9th, 10th, or 11th graders in either a DCPS or DC charter high school, and no older than 18 years of age.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Students in the “Japan in DC” summer program will explore and get to know a wide variety of people, places, organizations, businesses, government agencies, and cultural institutions with connections to Japan. It will be a lot of fun, with real-life exposure to the Japanese world and Japan-related careers in Washington, DC. Throughout the program, students will work on two projects designed to share what they learn with others – a collection of oral histories and interviews, and a city tour called “Japan in DC.” Note: This summer program does not include travel to Japan.
DATES, TIMES, AND LOCATION: The program runs from June 26-August 4, 2017. We meet Monday-Friday, 9:00 am - 2:30 pm (except for July 4th). Full attendance is expected. The program site will be Columbia Heights Education Campus, at the corner of 16th & Irving Streets, NW - near the Columbia Heights metro stop on the green line. This will be our base of operation, but there will be plenty of moving about the city, mostly using public transportation.
SUMMER PAY: If you have already registered for the Marion Barry Summer Youth Employment Program (MBSYEP), you will be eligible to be paid for your participation, though interested students not in SYEP will also be accepted on an unpaid basis.
SPECIAL SCHOOL-YEAR OPPORTUNITY FOR "JAPAN IN DC" PARTICIPANTS: “Japan in DC” is the third program in Globalize DC’s growing menu of Japan-related programs. Interested students who successfully complete the summer program will be invited to participate in next school year's Japanese Plus Program, our afterschool program for in-depth study of Japanese language, culture, and career exposure. To learn more about the Japanese Plus program go to
www.japaneseplus.org.
DEADLINE: We must fill all seats by May 26, 2017. Applications will be reviewed as they are received. An in-person interview is required for all applicants. We will be accepting students on a rolling basis, which means that the sooner you apply, the greater your chances of being accepted. Once we have filled all seats, the application period will end.
INSTRUCTIONS: Please fill out the form below. Be sure to answer all questions as thoroughly as you can. And also be sure to check your email daily for a response to your application.
